Luke Getsy: Chicago OC

Luke Getsy might be a name to remember when NFL teams begin their hiring process.

Former college QB. Got his start in the NFL as a Quality Control coach on Mike McCarthy’s staff in Green Bay. He worked his way up to WR coach before leaving in 2018 to be OC at Mississippi State then returned to Green Bay to be on Matt LeFleur’s staff in 2019.

He was known as Aaron Rodgers friend and guru in Green Bay. The Packers struggled in 2018 when he left for MSU. McCarthy gets fired that season, and Aaron Rodgers looks like his career is on a downward slide. Lafleur gets hired and brings back Getsy. Rodgers immediately wins back-to-back MVPs.

Getsy leaves this season to be OC for the Bears. Green Bay once again struggles, and Rodgers looks like his days are numbered.

Meanwhile, Justin Fields has made major improvements this season. He got off to a slow start, but it takes more than a single training camp and a couple of games to erase the Matt Nagy stain off that team.

Getsy was often overlooked in Green Bay because he was never a coordinator. Most recently, Lafluer was the HC and the play caller, Nathaniel Hackett was OC, and Getsy was QB coach and passing game coordinator. That’s a lot of coaches sharing responsibility and credit while having the benefit of a future HOFer playing QB.

Getsy was in line to assume the OC job in Green Bay to replace Hackett, but chose Chicago because he wants to be a head coach. The Green Bay OC doesn’t call plays. In Chicago, he gets to call plays and have a bigger influence on the offense because Eberflus is a defensive coach. He gets all the credit if he can develop Fields.
