Urban Meyer twice contacted Michigan about coming to the program as an assitant. Carr turned him down (Carr does not like strong personalities around him, just look at his assistants, none is coveted by any other BCS or even lesser conferences). But Mrs. Meyer likes the Midwest and would like to return (sort of like Rick Pitino's wife didn't like the East Coast and wanted to get back to horse country).

Carr wouldn't give Meyer the stamp of approval, but don't be deluded that he has much say. Michigan's program is not passed from coach to coach. Schembechler did not pick his replacement nor did he pick Carr. The selection is very "political" and designed to keep the program sound and major alums and donors happy.

That likely means an outside pick, a new direction and Les will likely lose out because he is a "Michigan Man."

Meyer isn't going to leave Heisman winning QB Tim Tebow and that the rest of his talent to go coach Ryan Mallet in 20 degree weather.

He might have wanted it back before he got the UF job, but UF is also one of the top 5 positions in CFB.

Meyer has a lot to stay for at Florida, so you may be right. When he went to Utah he had an out in his contract for one or more major jobs. One was Michigan (the other(s) may have been OSU and ND, not sure). Does he have any outs in his contract at Florida??

Meyer won at Bowling Green, he won at Utah and he won at Florida. He will likely win wherever he goes, if he goes anywhere at all. They all think that they can do better than the other guy, Spurrier thought he could handle the NFL, so did Saban, Petrino is learing the same lesson now and Pete Carroll learned it a while ago. Similarly, Charlie Weis, Dave Wanstedt and a lot of others have learned/are learning the reverse.

But they still go. It's in their DNA to seek the next challenge.

Michigan will not make the call soon. They will always respect a coaches current circumstance and will do so to their own detriment, so Les, if he is the choice, will not be encumbered by them until his season is over. There are plenty of recruting classes going forward, but they are only going to pick one coach. The class may suffer, but they will get the coach they see as fitting the program, even if that means going into next Feb. That is just the way Michigan is.

Spurrier was stacked and left it for Meyer to win the NC. They don't think like fans think. They relish the challenge.

Carr has serious health issues (suspected that he has 1st stage Parkinsons), he wanted to retire last year and Martin and Mary Sue Coleman talked him out of it. He did his duty and stayed the extra year and now he is done. Michigan won't contact Les Miles, if in fact they want him, until his season is over. What the media does in the meantime is not Lloyd's or Michigan's issue. It is what big time, big money college football has wrought. You want all that big CBS money to pay $3-4 million for a coach, you better expect they are going to stick a microphone in your face whenever they see fit, they paid for the right. Besides, Nebraska will be making a selection much sooner which might take some of the focus off Les, but maybe not off LSU.

Some times it sucks to be really good. Ask the Patriots, they are on their third set of assistants since they got good. The best find a way to keep it going, I'm sure LSU will as well. After all, you guys are stacked, so what great young coaches wouldn't want to go there. You should have your pick of the best and brightest for a long time to come. You should want that, God forbid that you stagnate the way Mich, Tenn, Penn St., Fla. St. have. You can't want that. Keep fresh thinking coming into your program and you will be on top for a long, long time.

If Lloyd waited he would have to lie to recuits for six weeks. That is just not going to happen. And the University would not ask of expect him to do that.

Michigan won't contact Miles, because they haven't so far. They knew Carr was leaving in September and they didn't contact anyone. No need to now either. They will work on their list and when an individual's season is over they will contact them, maybe interview them as well. I would not expect the selection of any coach until after the NC game, whether or not their choice is involved in it.

Don't rule out anyone at this point, including Jim Harbaugh. Martin is still stinging from their mid-season verbal exchange, but lots of important folks at Michigan like Jim Harbaugh (not really sure if he should be the coach, but folks would want him here). Bo might have "cuffed" him up-side his head for saying what he did, but Jim is a heck of a football guy and Bo loved him. In Ann Arbor that is what matters, not what Bill Martin thinks.

Bill Martin gets to make the hire, but folks you won't see will make the selection.

He really didn't say anything that any other candidate would say/has said. He's happy where he his is! Until someone asks him to come to Michigan. That hasn't happened yet.

IMHO he really does not have the experience to be the HC yet, but he didn't want to be...yet. But if they asked? Well that would be a different story. The real test will be if the next coach at Michigan asks him to come and be a part of his staff. Now there is a dilema for Jim. He can reamin in the BCS coaching ranks, but with no real chance to excel, or go to Michigan, do what he wanted to do for Lloyd (QB and OC coach), and be the heir apparent. He has tremendous charisma and would be dynamite in a recruits libving room. And he has very solid credential as both college and pro player to go with it. Wow! Jack Harbaugh and Les Miles were and are friends. This could get very complicated. If Les asked, would Jim come. Probably.

Kirk Ferenz is a nice coach. Great defensive mind. Would have him as my DC anytime. He put on some defensive shows here in the Big Ten that are legendary. Those defenses were stunning. But Iowa City is a tough place to recruit kids to, and he can't seem to get the offensive talent, especially at QB, to make a consistent challenge for the BT title.

Like Saban, his best chance is likely to go where he can get better kids.

Michigan would not likely raid another BT school, it would be an honor thing with them. Now Nebraska, that is a real possibility for Kirk. What he could do with that talent is staggering.
