I am for this 100%... But why would Coach O leave a NFL D-Line job for a college D-line job... Juist asking!

As has been mentioned already, some coaches just prefer the college game and are a better fit there (Saban, Spurrier, etc.). Popular opinion is that Coach O is in this category.

well, basically he said that Walker is still a candidate at New Mexico state...

Not to be a homer but LSU DC is a way better gig than HC at New Mexico State. Pellini just got a gig at one of the all time great programs. NMS is a graveyard. he would be well advised to wait two or three years at LSU, then be in line for a much much beter job. TexasAM, Miami, Auburn, Arizona, hell maybe even UCLA will all be on the market soon. he'll get several million dollars and maybe a ring as a reward for his patience.

I agree. I still think it would be a great coaching staff, should it happen. It might well mark Miles biggest move as the coach at LSU.
For as much as he is lampooned by the media and Tiger Nation, I like the fact that he has always sought out and hired big names in the coaching fraternity! There were a couple of threads in here that talked about how good Tubby might have been as HC, but remember Tubby's downfall was being too stubborn and failing to address shortcomings in his coaching staff!

I don't know what you guys are on, but this is horrible news. Number one, I've never liked Coach O - he was a poor HC, the Saints line ( ok, the entire D ) isn't very good, and if rumors were true, he's the guy that helped to send McKnight to USC vs LSU while he was a coach at Ole Miss. Secondly, have you actually watched UCLA's defense play? They can blame their bad offense all they want, but truth is, the defense isn't very good either. If this comes to pass, Miles really screwed the pooch, especially with Rhoades and Chavis unemployeed.

I second this. Walker could still take the NMSU job and Orgeron isn't nearly the shoe-in that blog makes him out to be.

I don't know what this dude is talking about. UCLA's D has been strong as hell under Walker. Especially considering what they've had on O.

I will have to disagree UCLA has ZERO talent on either side of the ball. Walker would mold a hell of a defense out of our guys. I could care less about orgeron other than the recruiting but Walker would be head and shoulders above Chavis and Rhoades

Please explain this logic to me. Chavis has had TOP 5 total defenses while coaching in SEC. What has Walker done so great as a DC? Please explain why this guy who has been a DC for only 3 years (with none of his defenses ranked very high nationally) is "head and shoulders" over other proven guys w/ proven, nationally ranked defenses in the past.

They don't want to hear it ( see responses to my post ) - all they know is he's new so he must be good! Sigh...

Been a Saints fan too long so I'll believe it when I see it. If true it would be great!

keep in mind these rankings are with what i consider subpar talent

In 2007, the Bruin defense once again found itself listed among the national leaders in several categories. UCLA ranked 14th in rushing defense (109.2 yards per game), 29th in total defense (343.23 yards), 29th in scoring defense (22.3 points), and 32nd in pass efficiency defense (115.26). The Bruins also ranked second nationally in tackles for loss per game (8.77), third in third down conversion defense (29.1%), tied for 15th in sacks per game average (3.0) and tied for 17th in fumbles caused (14). Defensive backs Trey Brown (tied for first, 1.77/g) and Alterraun Verner (tied for 11th, 1.46/g) ranked among the nation's best in the passes defensed category, while defensive end Bruce Davis ranked tied for ninth in the nation in sacks per game (.92).

In 2006, the Bruins were among the national leaders in rushing defense (tied for ninth in the NCAA and tied for first in the Pac-10 with 91.08 yards per game) and total defense (33rd nationally at 304.83) and allowed almost half as many touchowns (27) as the previous year (48). UCLA allowed 91.1 yards per game, 2.83 yards per rush and just nine touchdowns on the ground, the first time since 1985 that the Bruins had allowed fewer yards per game on the ground. The Bruin defense also ranked fifth nationally in third-down conversion defense (28.4%, 50 of 176). Walker joined the Bruins from the Washington Redskins, where he had coached the secondary, specifically the cornerbacks, the previous two seasons (2004-05) under head coach Joe Gibbs and highly-respected defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

i also like the fact he has experience in coaching the secondary.

Here is something people will want to read:

LINK

quote:

"Coach Walker laid down the law," Davis recalled. "He said, 'I don't care what you want to play. This is what you're going to play. Just go do it.' He told me how he wanted it and how it was going to be. It was kind of intimidating at the time but I'm glad he did it. It's made me and everybody else better."

If anyone is confused, what I pasted above is exactly what our defense needs.

I am also impressed with his experience in the NFL

Walker spent the 2001 season as associate head coach/secondary coach at USC under Pete Carroll and was the first staff member hired by Carroll. That season, the Trojans ranked seventh nationally with 19 interceptions and also ranked 16th nationally in pass defense (179.2 yards) and 16th (tied) in fewest touchdown passes allowed (11).

He also served as secondary coach of the New England Patriots for three seasons, the first two (1998 and 1999) under Carroll and the third (2000) under Bill Belichick. During his tenure with the Patriots, defensive backs Ty Law and Lawyer Milloy each earned trips to the Pro Bowl.

I will say that I doubt we actually get the guy and I am not saying chavis and rhoades suck but I would rather bring in some youth and energy that has a history of maximizing talent versus an sec retread.

I like Walker as much as the next guy, but he is only 4 years younger than Chavis and seven years older than Rhoads.
