So chicken did a thread with some back ground info on campbell, thought i would throw stats for people to digest

LINK

He is in his 6th season at Iowa State after spending 5 years at Toledo as HC. He is about to be 42 and got his first HC gig at only 32.

He is from ohio and the son of a HS coach. He initially went to pitt and then transferred to Mount Union as a dlineman and won 3 NCs there and was named an All american in 2002.

Playing career
1998 Pittsburgh
1999–2002 Mount Union
Position(s) Defensive lineman

Coaching career (HC unless noted)
2003–2004 Bowling Green (GA)
2005–2006 Mount Union (OC/OL)
2007 Bowling Green (OL)
2008 Bowling Green (RGC/OL)
2009 Toledo (RGC/OL)
2010–2011 Toledo (OC/OL)
2012–2015 Toledo
2016–present Iowa State

Year Team Overall Conference Standing

2011 Toledo 1–0 0–0
2012 Toledo 9–4 6–2 T–2nd (West)
2013 Toledo 7–5 5–3 T–3rd (West)
2014 Toledo 9–4 7–1 T–1st (West)
2015 Toledo 9–2 6–2 T–1st (West)
Toledo: 35–15 24–8

2015 saw the toledo team peak at #20 in the AP and they opened the season beating Arky at Arky.

It is important to note, he did not build toledo, Tim Bekcman did taking them from 3-8 to 8-4 in his final season before taking the Illinois job.

AS far as team talent at Toledo, the composite only goes back to 2015, where he had the 3rd best roster in the MAC, yet won the division. He left them in amazing shape with by far the most talent in the conference with 2 **** & 41***

Recruiting wise, he learned from Beckman on this who learned mainly from Tressel. Beckman had them as the #1 ranked class in the MAC every year he was there. Campbell didnt continue the tradition the whole time of finishing #1 but did his first 2 seasons. His last season they finished 4th but the average was still there. Looks like he only had 1 down class which was the 2014 class which didnt have them sign as many as normal.

So he kept recruiting consistent, actually more consistent in terms of number of *** players they were signing.

So what do we take from his time at toledo?

1) kept recruting consistent and actually improved it in # of ***
2) won more than Beckman
3) left them with stacked roster which is evident in the 16,17,18 records.
4) Toledo is not a place that can just maintain success no matter the coach and that is very evident as Campbells recruits have left, the record has gotten worse and worse. his successor went 9-4, 11-3 with mainly campbell guys, then started falling off to 7-6, 6-6, 4-2 & currently 5-5.

SO in the end

1) from ohio
2) maintained the record recruiting success obtained from his prev coach and slowly improved total talent and record.

offense-
2015- 32.3ppg 461ypg
2014- 36.6ppg 490ypg (yes please)
2013- 33ppg 447ypg
2012- 31.5ppg 445.2ypg
2011 as OC- 42.2ppg 481.3yppg ( )

one thing i noticed is the defense steadily got better under him as HC. 1st season they gave up 473ypg by the end they were giving up 375ypg. SO big improvement there.

obviously the offense stats look great, especially considering the era.

ok at ISU

Iowa State Cyclones (Big 12 Conference) (2016–present)
2016 Iowa State 3–9 2–7 9th
2017 Iowa State 8–5 5–4 T–4th
2018 Iowa State 8–5 6–3 T–3rd
2019 Iowa State 7–6 5–4 T–3rd
2020 Iowa State 9–3 8–1 1st
2021 Iowa State 6–4 4–3
Iowa State: 41–32 30–22

he took over for Paul Rhodes who had only won 32 games in 7 seasons and sported a whopping .368 winning %. In fact at ISU since 87, they have had 4 coaches before Matt. In those 29 seasons they had a winning % of 0.35905 and went 121-216.

In Rhodes last 2 seasons they went 2-10(0-9) & 3-9(2-7) and the team campbell took over had only seen 4 conference wins in their career at ISU. The team ranked 8/10 in team talent in 15 and the team left to matt was 8/10.

The teams left him has finished last,2nd to last & 8/10 in conference recruiting rankings the 3 years prior.

Matt takes over for 2016 season(2017 recruting class)

1st year they went 3-9 and struggled. He immediately signed 26*** players which was more than they had been but still finished 7th in conference. Composite had this team as 552pts which was up from 529.

2017 his 2nd season they went 8-5 and won more conference games than they had the 3 years prior combined. Composite had this team as 565pts which was up.

2018- 8-5 again but better conf record. Composite had this team as 575pts which was up again

2019- 7-6 but still winning record in conf. Composite had this team as 597pts which was up again

2020- 9-3, 8-1 in conf and won NY6 bowl. Composite had this team as 603pts which was up again

2021- currently 6-4 and has lost some games they shouldnt have. Composite had this team as 613pts which was up again

On the recruiting front, he has slowly raised them to were they are about 6th in conference now which is a big improvement. Currently have the 3rd rated class for 2022. He relies mainly on 3 star players and development. Overall though you can see a steady increase in terms of overall team talent in the composite rankings which is what you want. doesnt matter if its transfers, recruits etc.

ok stats at ISU
2016- 27.7 ppg, 421 ypg
2017- 29.2ppg, 386ypg
2018- 26.8ppg, 371ypg
2019- 32.2ppg, 444
2020- 32.9ppg, 436ypg
2021- 32.5ppg, 434ypg

defense went from giving up 453 year before and 452 his first year to 366,369,341,307(currently) so a big improvement there on top of the pretty steady improvement in offense output.

on offense he uses a balanced approach out of the spread. Uses up to 3 TEs very very similar to a lot of NFL teams.

he is a culture guy and uses the “recruit, retain, and develop” philosophy when approaching recruiting. (the retain and development part would be a nice change from current staff, thats for sure.)

as far as NFL goes, he has declined to interview as position coach atleast twice before becoming HC, and turned down the request to interview for the jets and told detroit not interested also.

pretty good article on his offense.
athletic article on him

Offensive Philosophy - There wouldn’t be much transition for the players if Campbell were to come to FSU. He has a spread philosophy and a diverse run game. He likes to get defenses to stack the box which allows the QB to make hi-low reads. His offense is multiple. As you can see his offense is traditionally a run first mentality:

In the end I think he would be a great coach at LSU. Lots of upside especially in the swinging above his class, talent wise and overall development and culture would be a huge positive. 100% has some concerns, mainly overall recruiting and some of the losses.

Hopefully yall find this useful since its apparently matt campbell week.

I think Campbell will definitely bring back the physicality we’ve been lacking since 2019 (and really even before that, we just had the greatest offense of all time to cover a lot of issues). Getting back to running downhill with the types of athletes we have here will be fun to watch

pretty balanced and if you look at the ypg for both rushing and passing it plays out too.

was strikes me prolly most is the defensive improvement both places. offense improved but that was to be expect being an Offensive coach, but the defense improvement was huge surprise once i started researching.

I see alot of people are questioning Campbells recruiting.

wanted to point out the talent increase when he arrived and how he did recrutiing at Toledo.

personally i like napier more and I do think Campbell will struggle recruiting in the SEC, but he did recruit well at Toledo and has imrproved overall talent at ISU.

Also is currently recruiting much better than average at ISU.
