A little backstory: I started reading Wheel of Time in my senior year of high school. I managed to read Fires of Heaven in 2012 and I haven't gone back to the series. I would love to finish it.

My question is whether I should start over or pick up with Lord of Chaos. I really don't remember too much other than major events that happened.

What do y'all think?

I would re-start, maybe start with Book 2 if you want. Those are the best books in the series up through Book 6 or 7.

While it probably isn't necessary, you would be picking it up for 2 or 3 good books and then you would run into the slow patch of books 8/9/10. 8/9 aren't good but they aren't terrible either. Book 10 is just an entire book of set-up which pays off in Book 11, which is quite good. The final 3 are all pretty solid considering a different author had to pick up the reigns of the series.

That is a lot more than you asked for but best to know what you are getting into and make a decision with all the information available.

Start over. Way too many characters to just pick it up again.

I read the first book recently after finally giving into my friend's constant persistence that I should read this series, and I can confirm that the number of characters is difficult to keep up with. My biggest issue was the similarity between the names of a handful of characters.

Overall I thought the book was ok. It had some great moments along with some cliched forgettable ones. I haven't quite found the inspiration to continue this series though.

How much more convoluted does this list of characters get after this first book? Does the story tighten up and offer more originality?

The cast of characters gets much larger. But the story gets much more original and tremendously better after the first book. Jordan was mimicking Tolkien a bit in the first book in order to get published.

I stopped in the middle of book 5, and I have absolutely zero wish to go back and reread the first 4.

there are some good websites that give decent detailed summaries.

As to tightening up or more characters: LOL.

It gets MUCH larger and MUCH MUCH more sprawling. The amount of characters is borderline insanity.

The story though does get much more original. As previously mentioned, the first book is an intentional LOTR ripoff because at the time, he felt he needed a derivative story in order to get published. Book 2 sort of starts to expand but treads the line.

You are finally introduced to the REAL character of Mat which is most people's favorite character in Book 3.

Books 4-7 are the highpoints of the series with some truly great moments and world expansion.

I used tarvalon.net to help me keep up with previous summaries. Have book and individual chapter summaries but be careful with the spoiler section. It’s hidden but it popped open once or twice though I didn’t think I hit it.

Ok this is encouraging. I'll keep going with it then. Hopefully I can keep up with all the characters...

Not so much an answer to your question, but I just received in the mail the first three books of the series. Heard of it for years, and just got around to needing something new to read.
