So I've got about 100 pages left in the final book and this series has just floored me, especially books two and three. Book 1 was good and interesting but the scope and some of the ideas presented in the final two books have been incredible.

I really enjoy books that make me view things in a new way or look at things in a different light - and the ideas the author has about how humanity would react to certain situations has done that to me time and time again. Plus a lot of very interesting concepts about how intelligent life in the universe may react to one another.

Don't want to say too much, but it is definitely a series to read for any science fiction fans - even people that aren't into that genre can enjoy it IMO. Sure, you have to get past a few things but most of the ideas presented, especially in the first two books, at least seem pretty plausible in the future.

It does focus on the actual science a bit more than you often see; however, I think it does a good job of explaining enough for people who aren't familiar with concepts of string theory, etc., to follow without going too far. I read some of the pop science books on that kind of thing and enjoy that subject matter a lot so that may play a role into how much I enjoy it.

Amazon bought the TV rights earlier this year, which is what turned me on to it. So i assume it will be a tv show at some point in the future, not sure where they are on all that though.

I listen to a lot of audio books on overdrive through my library. I listened to the first book, and to my surprise they don't have the second book, but then they have the damn third book. Pretty mind blowing to have the 1st and 3rd of a series but not the 2nd.

That's what prompted my search and post on the tech board about myanonomouse and audio book torrents.

I loved this trilogy. All three books were outstanding; each in its own way.

The third book gets a little out there, but in a good way. I really enjoyed the ending, and what their decision meant for the future of the Universe.

Every person I have lent these books to has not been able to get passed the first one. Either the Chinese names turn them off, or the subject matter is too dense for them.

I also felt the first book didn't really get me into the characters like the second and third - I thought it was maybe something a little lost in translation from the different style - but the second and third books definitely had the characters better developed IMO.

The first book was more of a slow burn, but man, the reveal when they receive a response was totally worth it. I liked the background info on Communist China; it did a good job of laying out everyone's mindset and motives.

Just finished and the third book does get really out there at the end but again, some really cool concepts presented in an interesting way.

The trilogy is very hard to read as a westerner, especially one who is used to reading character-driven books.

That said, it's groundbreaking and introduces new Sci-Fi concepts and is a very important read for any sci-fi lover.

I'd say that it may be as important as Asimov or Arthur C. Clarke as far as introducing new, or expounding upon cutting edge tech concepts.

I really liked book 1. I had a really hard time with the character names and keeping them straight.

I gave up on book 2, I was just bored with it.

Book 2 was depressing as frick in certain instances, but the second half was incredible.

This series is very different than Malazan to me, but similar in that neither is really a "fun, easy read" but both of them are so rewarding. Like I said in the first post, this series is probably best for people who enjoy reading something that makes you think about things in a new light and poses certain questions and ideas that you haven't though about before.

I thought much of book 2 got lost in its own dark forest before a great ending.

The third book is one of my favorite novels of the past decade.

Anyone picked up Liu's Ball Lightning yet? He wrote it in 2005, but it was just translated and published in the US this year.

I hadn't heard about this book. I'll have to ask Santa for it.

I'm excited for the Redemption of Time book being published next year in English. Its a pretty cool story - someone wrote some fan fiction about what happens to Yun Tianming that people loved and eventually it got published.
