I was interested in this book for a while but I only recently got along to reading it. I started a few days ago and it’s a pretty good read. Philip K. Dick has really painted a dreary picture of post-war America. It can be a little hard to follow at times though. Have any of y’all read it? What did you think? I know the TV show is popular right now, but I haven’t had the time to watch it.

Dick is an enigma. The ideas he has are fantastic. It is the execution of his concepts that I find are hit and miss. Some of it is really good. I read this book many, many years ago.
Character development is pretty good. The series is one of those that the pilot was good (that was one of those that Amazon ordered a bunch of pilots and developed the ones that got the most support from viewers), the first season was a decent slow burn, but the second season was really good.

Best ending of all time. Seriously. I’ve read a lot and that’s my GOAT ending. It’s worth finishing.

I’m a huge fan of Dick. But even I’ll say his prose is far, far, far from spectacular and his stories always drag or get muddled in the middle. However, his concepts, his crazy arse ideas, and his mindfrick conclusions are hard to top. But yeah I mean he’s not a great novelist if you are judging him on style or execution.

I must have missed the point of the ending of the book because this was not my reaction

Its a mind f--k but, yeah, could have been executed better. As for the tv series, you have to understand that is more or less "inspired" by the book rather than following it to the "T." If you can stomach that, it is a very good series.

Interesting idea but I think the show is much better than the book. Moves at a slower, more appropriate pace, develops characters better. The show is a treat to look at, amazing production design and a giant budget I’m sure, but I find it much more enjoyable than the book.

I enjoy them on their own merits as 2 different things that share common characters and themes.
I'm fascinated with Dick's 'Allies win' reality being different from our own and resulting in a Cold War bn the US and UK.
That said, the show's premises are great for that medium. The current storyline of Nazis attempting invasion of other realities comes from the proposed and partially written sequel to the novel.
