If you like GOT, I'd like to recommend this book series. Has a little bit of everything as far as what makes a good story but I think the character creation and development is what makes it an excellent read. The magic in this series is not the typical wave your hand and throw a bolt of lightning. It is instead woven into the story and has varied applications.

The Briar King
The Charnel Prince
The Blood Knight
The Born Queen

The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone is the name of a fantasy novel series by Gregory Keyes. They follow the story of Anne Dare, descendant of Virgenya Dare, a famed ruler who used her magic to aid the kingdom of Crotheny. Her descendants rule the kingdom until a traitorous plot to overthrow them leads to tragedy.

The books generally follow the overall fate of its several protagonists and the lands from which they hail. The events recounted deal mainly with the destiny of the kingdom of Crotheny. However, several strands of plotlines sometimes lead to one another while also expanding the history, characters and events of the series. The series leans more on its character development to develop the plot from several different perspectives, but is also peppered with legends, myths, detailed world backstory, kingdoms, wars and monsters that characterize the genre.

This is a solid series. I was always surprised Keyes didn't have any other well known series after that.

I thoroughly enjoyed the chosen of the changeling series (especially the 1st book the waterborne). I also thought the age of unreason was really well done.

I haven't read either, but both were before the Briar king books. He just kinda disappeared after briar king, which I found surprising.

I think he started writing book versions of video games and also wrote a few star wars books...if I recall correctly, he killed off Chewbacca in what is now, thankfully, a non-Canon series. But that may have been before the briar king. His world building is very good. That is to be expected though, since he was originally an anthropologist.
