Brilliant science fiction or thinly veiled social commentary? I'm considering reading it, but I'm leery of the political subtexts lurking in some of the synopses and review blurbs. Has anyone read it? Worthwhile? No spoilers, please.

It's kinda both. Like the symbolism is very obvious, but that doesn't make it not effective. It does have an interesting magic system and the world is well-developed. Jemisin also does some really cool things with viewpoint. Plus, it is nice to read a fantasy series in which each book is only around 300-400 pages. Like, I am pretty sure that a standard Wheel of Time book is longer than the entirety of this series.

I read the first book and it was interesting. I wasn't that interested in the actual plot, but it was extremely well written and did some very creative things. She's definitely a very talented writer.

But calling her social commentary thinly veiled is accurate, maybe even a little nice.

It's a great book series, extremely well written. And while I've seen plenty of comments online from and about the author that make her seem uber woke, I didn't find the series heavy handed or preachy at all.

Its brilliant sci fi and very worthwhile, but if you are the kind of person to get upset about some of this "social commentary" then you should move on as there is plenty of social commentary in how her characters act and view the world. I never found it offensive or out of place or over the top, its just well laced over the world she has built.
