Written in 1994, this book chronicles the first clash of armies commanded by Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. I'm currently reading it and I must say I am enthralled. If you love military history, particularly Civil War history, this book is for you. The battle itself was confusing and bloody as more than 29,000 Americans fell killed or wounded in just two days of explosive combat.

I read this one in the '90s - it was good and I remember Rhea being a good writer. His book on Spotsylviania Court House, which was the immediate aftermath of the Wilderness, was also good. I see that he's written some others on the VA campaigns.

And these books were published by LSU press, so there is that too.
