Just finished this series. It's a complete trilogy. Unique magic systems. Gun powder rifles, swords, a coup, gods, international political machinations, engaging characters and a breakneck plot.

It is very much worth the read. Fans of Anthony Ryan, Brent Weeks, Joe Abercrombie, Brandon Sanderson and the like will probably enjoy the hell out of it. Pretty sure he studied under Sanderson at BYU.

Agreed, it's a very good series. The first two books of his next series set in the same world are very good as well.

I'd also suggest Django Wexler's Shadow Campaigns series which is set in a very similar steampunk fantasy world and is excellent as well.

Hmm...I'll have to look into it someday.

I recently read, and enjoyed, "The Aeronauts Windlass" by Jim Butcher that's the same sort of deal. Unfortunately, it was book one in a currently being written series.

I dug that book, not as much as the Dresden books, but it was very solid. Too bad Butcher has gone all George RR martin/Rothfuss on us and is taking forever to write now.

If you like Aeronauts Windlass alot you might want to try the "Tales of the Ketty Jay" series of books by Chris Wooding, which is another fantasy airship style series. It is a really fun series that is kinda like a steampunk version of the Firefly TV show.

I have yet to read any of the Dresden books, but plan to someday. However, I did find the writing better for “Windlass” than his “The Codex Alera” series, which I did like.

I love just about every book of the Dresden series (only 2 I disliked), but I could not get into this one. I stopped about 60% through it. It's been a while, so I can't remember why specifically, but I think the characters were a bit too cliche and uninteresting to me. And the story was non original.

The world was pretty cool though.

I liked it, but I have reached the point where I refuse to read a book until the series is done.
