but then going back on a reread, I loved Midnight Tides and really that whole middle trilogy just worked for me.
Yeah, Midnight Tides would probably be my favorite, though the 3 book is right up there with it. Both are phenomenal.

It is really impressive that in his whole series 8/9 are really the only two seem to be misses. I'm curious to see what I feel about my re-read of 8 this time, I've read a lot of comments from him about Toll The Hounds that may color my re-read, it was difficult to get through for me last time if I recall correctly, once again it had a great ending but the voice and the sort of meta fiction aspects were challenging.
And I'm not as low on 9 as you are, its sort of a slow brutal trudge getting to book 10, but I didn't hate it.

I think that's the only one of the series I've only read once, I might have to give it another go sometime. The hobbling parts and the traveling kids parts are just so meandering and brutal it just took me out of the story a good bit.
Toll the hounds is a total first half sucks, back half is awesome book for me. Though it does fair much better on reread, as some of the characters that are introduced play key roles in the final book. I feel about Toll the hounds kinda like you feel about Winter's Heart I think. It being 50% good rather than 25% good makes the difference for me

Show news:
The director of Episodes 7&8 posted on insta that he was heading home, as have some small crew members.
This leads to speculation as to if they are a wrap or not, or if they are now doing reshoots. All signs pointed to them filming through November and wrapping in early December at the latest. Them wrapping at the end of October would be a surprise...so its likely they are doing some reshoots now which is common.

Started this based on the recommendation. Almost through book 2, and I'm really enjoying it as well. I'm going to have to read some more by this author.
He does like to explore some erotica in each book, though.

is he better at writing wood nymph orgies than Rothfuss?

Also I have a new theory that Martin was the mastermind behind COVID so he could get out of his New Zealand / Worldcon guarantee.
quote:
“If I don’t have ‘The Winds of Winter’ in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for Worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done,” wrote Martin in a Not A Blog post in 2019.

I just put a hold for The Burning God - Book 3 of Poppy Wars.
Anyone read this one yet? Looks like it just came out a few weeks ago.

About halfway through Asimov's End of Eternity now. Very different and interesting take on what you recognize as similar themes in a book about changes in time / reality. I'm usually not really into this kind of sci fi that deals with the implications of being able to move back and forth in time, but this has been incredibly well done. Highly recommended

I need to get off my butt and go get a library card so I can do the same. I've only read the first book of that series, and it was solid but didn't knock my socks off. And I have a hard time paying over paperback price for a kindle book that has been out for a while unless the author is really good.

Ya it didn't quite live up to the hype (which was very high) for me - still very good and interesting take, but just not exactly the style I really fall in love with. Still excited to finish out - 6 week wait for the audiobook they said though.

The final book is pretty damned satisfying
I'll confess that I'm a sucker for footnotes in some styles (David Foster Wallace), but I skipped a lot of these, even though some of them were hilarious.
I liked the author's style enough that I'm about to pick up his first trilogy (evidently more of an Asian steampunk based world) from the library.
My son, coincidentally, has been reading some YA by the same author at the same time.

I finished up End of Eternity by Asimov this morning - really good take on a time travel story, which I am not usually in to. Short little read at 190 pages.

Thinking about starting either Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay or finally starting Riyaria Revelations this weekend.
Any thoughts on which one I should go with?

Haven't read any of tigana yet, but the several Kay novels I have read have been outstanding.
