Agree with most of the recommendations so far. Maybe a few to add:
David Eddings' Belgarid Series may be similar to Dragon Lance, from around same time.
T.C. Edge's Bladeborn Saga series is a good read.
Phillip Quaintrell's Echoes Saga is another good one.

Joe Abercrombie and his “First Law” world are pretty good. I think it has 2 independent trilogies and 2 standalone sand one book of short stories and the characters are great. Fun read with good writing, much easier to follow than some other large series.
