Thomas Costain had some pretty good books about the Plantagenets.

Its fiction, and I just started, but Pillars Of The Earth seems to do a good job describing the era w/ a lot of different characters.

The castle fortress in Tuchman's book is still there and is a hotel well known locally for its restaurant. After reading the book, the NYT had a writeup about the hotel and I've wanted to do that hotel.
