Lt. Julius Fish served in the same unit as Joseph Heller and his story parallels Yossarian. His grandson has a blog about it LINK

I read an article about this guy a couple of days ago. After the war, he refused to fly. He drove his family from Brooklyn (maybe the Bronx) to Yellowstone, camped one night, and drove back. Based on that alone, he was at best an iconoclast, at worst some would say he was a crazy bastard.
He and Heller were both in the 340th Bomb Group, although different squadrons. He flew 60 missions and then they raised the total required to 65. It was 25(!) when he entered the theatre. For his next 5 missions, he aborted every time (for various reasons). He only claimed 60 missions, but the sent him home. A doctor said he had a extreme case of "areo-anxiety".

well, he did go to war, after all, so wouldn't he HAVE to be crazy?

He'd have to be crazy to fly 65 missions. The USAAF allowed flight crews to remove themselves from combat. However, if he requested to be removed from flight status, that was a perfectly sane thing to do and therefore they were fit to fly.
That's a helluva catch, that Catch-22. The best there ever was.
