Simon Scarrow does some interesting stuff. Has one long series about the roman legions focusing on 2 main characters and their adventures.
Also does one on Napoleon and the Duke of Wellington
I had read a lot of the roman series but fell off a bit (think i've read like 10 of the 15 or something). The Napoleon stuff was good that i remember as well

Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel deal with the Tudors from Thomas Cromwell's perspective. Pretty impressive achievements. Cant wait for the next one.

I love Bernard Cornwell. His Arthur series is extraordinary.

I can't recommend a book with anymore fervor than Aztec by Greg Jennings. Easily the best book I have read in years.

Lots of great recommendations (particularly Fatherland-excellent one off novel)
I'll add another the Kingsbridge Trilogy by Ken Follett

Flashman series which is a bit lighter/funnier.
The audiobooks are amazing. I am on the third book and can't stop laughing.

Same here. I was pissed when realized they didn't have the 5th book at Audible
