Help for an aspiring writer...

In semi-retirement, I have some time on my hands, and would like to write a book.
I am looking for groups that will read samples and give feedback. Do these exist?

I’d be willing to trade feedback for feedback, if you’re interested in that? Working on a short story that’s almost ready for some.

Absolutely, although mine is just in the outline stage.

I would also be willing to read for anyone if they're willing to return the favor at a later date.

Ok, just bump the thread whenever you’re ready. And if you’re interested in books on writing, I can give you a few suggestions there too.

There are probably enough folks on TD.com to support a writing group. I'm too lazy to write, but I have lots of ideas so I'd probably be a decent collaborator.
It is probably hubris, but I think I'd make a good editor if I had all the requisite skills. I don't know what I don't know about the business.
Self-publishing online is probably the future. That much is obvious. You're likely not going to get rich, but it has never been easier to get exposure and actually get what you write read by folks outside your circle of family or friends.

I was in a couple of writers groups when I lived in BR. I'm plodding away at a novel myself. Moved to Houston several years ago; it's hard to find good writers groups here...surprising for such a big city.
If you're in BR, check the EBRPL website. They might have links to writers groups there. I think I saw they're offering a workshop this summer. Actually, check the library wherever you live if you're in a decent sized city.
BTW I'd be willing to trade a chapter or two when/if you have something to share. I think we do have several aspiring writers on TD!

May I suggest you inquire at your local public library? I know that writers' groups often meet at libraries in my area, and the librarians are familiar with that.
Depending on your social and political inclinations, it may be easier or harder to find the right group. My area is ultra liberal and, thus, it would be difficult for me to find my peer group.
But it's certainly worth a try!

Thanks. I currently write Substack newsletters, but I want to branch out to short stories and novels.
Newsletter focused on critical thinking.
Random musings.

Yes. I think you can probably find some on Meetup or Craigslist. If not, see if there is a coffee shop or some other space that holds readings.

I’ve written a novel and a few short stories
Loosely tried to publish the novel a few years ago but didn’t really have the network or resources. The literary marketplace book was a good starting point to get in the door with a couple publishing houses.
I wrote a short horror story on a recent long turbulent flight that got good feedback from some close writing peers.
I kinda wanna get back to the novel and do more revisions (the worst part of tProcess by far) but i also kinda just wanna leave it alone in my computer. I plan on writing another one day.
I always liked the quote from Finding Forrester about the first draft coming from your heart and the second from your head and how no matter how good or shite your end product is, you should feel satisfaction at doing something that most people not even some editors have ever accomplished.

I expect you're better at outlines than I am. Honestly tried it but find I go off road too many times. Writing a series, and made an outline after book one to start book two. Works different for everyone, good luck (or luck not needed) getting beyond the outline stage.

Only the finished product will determine if I am good at outlines.

Just looking at this old post, and I was just thinking that I would be a better writer than idea generator.

Well, it's been over a year since I posted about my first short story, and I finally finished it. If anyone is interested in reading it, I would very much appreciate any feedback.

Gratuitous bump to ask if there are any sites to submit short stories for review and/or feedback.

Here are some writing tips which have helped me publish four novels:
