I never really come over to the Book Board, but I thought I'd share one of my favorite books that you all might enjoy reading.
As the title of the thread says, Summer of Night by Dan Simmons. Great book. The best way to describe it is a scary Stand by Me. Simmons is also a heck of a writer.
Multiple covers

Hyperion was sometimes difficult to get through, but damn his prose is exceptional.

Completely agree. He has written a number of very good (okay, great) books and this is definitely one of them. The sequel, A Winter Haunting, was NOT one of them (at least for me). As I recall, it was okay but was a let down from Summer of Night.
Another of his books that I seldom see mentioned (but that I really liked) is Carrion Comfort, a novel about psychic vampires (as in mind controlling vampires). It won the the Bram Stoker (horror writing) award back in 1989.

Yeah, A Winter Haunting was a big let down unfortunately.
