Making this thread so people don’t think we are crazy for discussing this book in sci-fi thread. Spoilers after this post, but for those unfamiliar with this book, it’s the second book from the author of The Library at Mount Char. It’s not a sequel to that book and it is just as weird, if not weirder.

Assuming only iwyLSUiwy and I have read this so far. I would have to agree with you on ranking it slightly below Mount Char. I’m a big fan of weird, but it went a little far towards the end after the fight with the angel and the war in Heaven. I’m beginning to think Scott has a problem with religion 
Felt bad for Mercy and the fat beagle and, other than the small child at the start and the doctor, they were the only deaths I felt were unjustified. The supporting cast of animals he met along the way were my favorite part, specifically the chipmunk Apple and the fox Slipper. Cool little Easter egg with name-dropping the tiger Nobununga. I can’t see how else this could tie-in to Mount Char.
Other than a desperate attempt to avoid damnation in Hell from the Old Kitty Mother, I’m honestly not sure what I’m supposed to take from Blacktail’s journey to wake the forest god and end humanity in the process.

Yea I told you it got weird
Interesting little tie in to Mount Char with Nobununga getting mentioned at the end as one potential Lord of the Forest that Old Kitty Mother had hopes for over the years.
The chapter where Blacktail kills all the house pets that loved their two legs, who was legitimately a good person, was a really tough read. I forget the dogs name but him protecting his mommy was just brutal. Had to pause the book I was so frustrated/sad. I'm like come on Blacktail, show some sort of sympathy/understanding and not be so blind to your rage and revenge. There was legit no reason to kill all those animals. Kind of soured me on rooting for him the rest of the way.
Some of the angelic stuff was confusing. Don't even really know what to make of it. That's when it jumped to wtf am I reading now.
I didn't get the end when Little One was now a pack leader and he found Old Kitty Mother and gave her a message from Blacktail/Forest God. Can't remember what the message was but he passed along a short message and it changed Old Kitty Mother from being ok dying to that she now had some new goal in life and things left to get done. I was like was this some message from earlier in the book that I missed out on because it was so random and made it seem like it was a message the reader would understand too. Or maybe was setting it up for a sequel? Kind of left me scratching my head.
Overall a good read and definitely checked the weird box i was expecting but man if you don't like animals dying this book is not for you

The message was she was no longer damned to Hell from the deal her mother made with her soul. The deal was revealed in the same chapter and I’m guessing it was the reason she spent her life looking for an animal to wake the forest god. Now that her soul is saved, maybe she could focus on other mysteries or magic. I liked the reference to the rat she found that started the Bubonic plague. Not sure if the shark was also meant to be a reference, but my personal one will be Jaws

yea that was pretty cool. I was thinking the shark could have been a good one because it seemed like aquatic animals might be easier to tempt since they they wouldn't really have a connection to humans and it would be harder for humans to hunt the killers. But that story did put a decent little bow on the ending.
Hopefully he doesn't go 11 years in between novels again. He's a talented writer and like you were thinking he probably doesn't like religion i was thinking this dude has a bit of a warped mind
Though i don't really read horror so just the brutal killing stuff is kind of new to me.
