Do any of you have suggestions for audio books that would interest 8yo boys and parents? We listened to the Hatchet series last year and all enjoyed it, but having a hard time finding another.

Outdoors, adventure, war themes, maybe sci-fi preferred.

TIA

As far as sci-fi audiobooks:

Ready Player 1 was fun.

I also liked the Bobiverse series. Only 2 books right now, but the 3rd comes out in August.

Literally, listening to it right now and wondering if my 7 yr old son would/could get through it with me.

Profanity has come up a few times. But man would he love the VR/Gaming aspect.

I've listened to it twice Over the last couple years and now I've convinced my wife to listen to it with me in the car in anticipation of the movie.

There's a little cursing but not too much from what I remember.

ok, there were just a few thousand words spent on sex bots, virtual whorehouses, and masturbation.

May have to skip this chapter.

I guess it's off the list.

And the best part of the book are the 80s references, which unless you have the coolest kid of all time, would go straight over his head.

Call of the Wild and White Fang?

Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot books?

Harry Potter?

A Wrinkle in Time?

Um... Do they make audiobooks of Goosebumps and Matt Christopher stuff?

Maybe some Roald Dahl stuff?

Any of the Rick Riordan books maybe? Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.

Charlotte's Web

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Over Sea, Under Stone

I don't really know what you consider appropriate for them. But if you read Hatchet, I would think all of these would be within acceptible subject matter and you'd probably enjoy most of them. Particularly Jack London, Rick Riordan, Harry Potter and Wrinkle in Time

Great list, thanks!

I just don't want to listen to 12 hours of kids books, something we can all enjoy. The hatchet series was great.

Alright, my time to shine. Been listening to audiobooks with my son for the past 4 years. He's 11 now. Hatchet was one of the first books we listened to.

FWIW in Bobiverse, at least one F bomb is dropped in the first book. Other than that it's kid appropriate IMO.

List of books we've listened to:

Star Wars: Ahsoka
To Kill a Mockingbird
Yellow Star (an Anne Frank type Holocaust story written for a young audience)
Star Wars: Bloodline
Zoe's Tale (a YA genre book in the Old Man's War series, the rest of the series is definitely not kid appropriate)
Star Wars: Lost Stars
Star Wars: Dark Disciple
What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions (from the author of the xkcd website, my son really enjoyed this one)
Holes
A Wrinkle in Time
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Some books I have lined up for us to listen to:

Harry Potter series
Star Wars: Battlefront Twilight Company
Star Wars: Aftermath series
Astrophysics for People in a Hurry
The Lord of the Rings

ETA: I read Ready Player One and am holding that one off until he's a bit older. To kill a mockingbird was probably a bit much for him, with the rape and n-word being used and all, but I used it as a teaching moment. It was easier to talk about rape and racism because of the book rather than just bringing it up out of the blue.

Stephen King's Dark Tower series.

Covers outdoors, adventure, plenty of gunfire, fantasy (if not sci-fi).

That would be great until my 6 year old started calling his 1st grade teacher a "honky mu fricka"!

Do you want your kid to be the cool kid in class or not?

But I think the 8 year old in the OP could handle it. I think that was about the age I started the series, maybe a year or two older.

Making it through the Dark Tower also opens avenues to listen to some of his other books with Dark Tower tie ins.

Salem's Lot
Black House
Cell
Cujo
The Eyes of the Dragon
Hearts in Atlantis
Insomnia
IT
Pet Sematary
The Shining
The Stand
Etc.

I'm actually trying to decide on this as well, for just the wife and I.

I listened to Lonesome Gods and I thought it was great and can't wait till my kids are old enough to enjoy it. It's a western but about a young boy. Imagine a 7-8 year old could follow along with it.

I listen to audiobooks all the time. Narrator plays a big role in how enjoyable it is or isn't.

Both by Christopher Moore. Both hilarious. Both adult only.
