Alarming, gut-wrenching, informative, but important. Very important.

This book is a wonderful narrative of thousands of accounts stemming from the September 11th attacks. From New Yorkers in the buildings and the NYFD, to the flight attendants and passengers, the workers in the Pentagon, and passengers on United Airlines Flight 93. This book provides their stories and heartbreaking transcripts from conversations to and from their loved ones.

It really shows me how to never take any day for granted. I say "I love you" more often to my wife and kids. I hug them a little tighter a little longer. I try and never take anything granted. Cue Warren Zevon, but this book helps me "enjoy every sandwich."

These people woke up, had their coffee, sent their kids off to school, and headed to work like the rest of us on that crisp, clear Tuesday morning. Like us, they were focused on their meetings, e-mails, conference calls, and tasks for the day. I'm sure most were looking forward to that afternoon's happy hour, dinner with family, maybe a date, or to catch a game at a bar with some friends.

Regrettably, nobody knew what was in store for them. And over a short moment, BAM, and life for America changed.

I had an Army buddy (reservist), who was an airline pilot and actually in the sky when it all went down.

He was right at the U.S. Canadian border and thought he was going to be directed to Nova Scotia. He convinced ATC that since he took off from the U.S., he ought to be able to land in the U.S. and that worked.

Scary times.

Lots of commentary in the book regarding that. They've got all of these jets in the sky; yet, it's a very dynamic, liquid situation. No one knew what was going on.

Initially, people thought it was a prop plane, and not a commercial airliner, that struck Tower 1. Then, as we know what unfolded, people didn't know just how many planes were hijacked out there. 1? 2? 100?

It also mentioned that they suspected this was an attack from Russia, and they directed F-16s to go out into the Atlantic to intercept any incoming flights.

Just an unbelievable, surreal moment of chaos and an knowing situation.

I read it last year. It is a hard read, but a good one.

The transcripts from phone calls of passengers and flight attendants on the hijacked planes were especially rough to read.

Thank you.
Added to the list. I watch all the 9/11 specials each year. The one about the air traffic controllers and getting every plane down is one I look forward to seeing.
