On Monday, LSU linebacker Micah Baskerville was named to the Butkus Award watch list.

The Butkus Award honors the nation’s best linebacker. Former LSU star Devin White previously won the award in 2018.

Baskerville, a 5th-year senior from Shreveport, La., started in 12 games last season and finished with 83 total tackles (40 solo), nine tackles for a loss, two sacks, and one interception.

I am here to eat some crow. I thought he was terrible at first. He has absolutely improved each season and it seems like he is poised to take an even larger leap this year.

Baskerville is easily one of the best LB’s against the pass or at setting the QB up for the int. He’s gotten better every year and made huge improvements on TFL and against the run. Last year was the first time he got to play a full season. If he can improve these numbers to;

INT’s - 3 or 4
FF - 1 or 2
FR - 1 or 2
Tackles - 90 plus
TFL - around the same
Sacks - 3 or 4

That should earn him the award. These awards are huge for future recruiting in the program so I hope Baskerville gets it.

Former teammate Damone Clark was hosed out of winning the award last year.
Baskerville has been among the elite vs the run for the last 2 years.
Unfortunately, this will go to the kid at Gumpville - deserving or not - just like last year.

I'm a huge fan of LSU, but Will Anderson was the best player in college football last year and deserves all the accolades he gets. Hope Micah beats him, though. :-)
