NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu is headed for massive extension with the Arizona Cardinals that could make him the highest paid safety in the NFL.
quote:

"They view him as one of the faces of the franchise and their community efforts," Rapoport said. "... From what I am told a new payday is expected to make him among the highest paid, if not the highest-paid safety in the NFL and don't be surprised, if all goes well, if this is done before everyone breaks for the summer."

Seattle's Earl Thomas earns $10 million per season, New England's Devin McCourty has the highest guarantee at $22 million and Eric Berry is under the franchise tag at $10.8 million in Kansas City.
Mathieu suffered a season-ending ACL injury in December and might not be ready for the Cardinals' 2016 season opener.

What an awesome story. Arizona and Patrick P gave him the away from home opportunity that he needed and he is thriving. What a comeback!

So freaking happy for him. When he got kicked out of LSU, he could have easily given up, but he never did, and he used that experience to make himself even stronger, becoming a better player and person. Arizona is a perfect fit for him, and Peterson is a wonderful mentor. So happy for Tyrann Matheiu, and happy to have had him as a tiger.

Good to see weed addiction didn't ruin his life. I've seen it so many times.

I can't believe they are going to pay him that much considering his known knee issues. But hey, if he can get that, more power to him.

This truly is a movie type of success story. Hats off for a beloved tiger, who made some mistakes that cost him, but had the drive to push through his past to make it to the top. Congrats TM7.

ACL injuries used to get players unemployed. Now a player can a contract for $10M/year just five months later. Crazy how far sports medicine has come.

Way to go Honey Badger. I'm still upset we didn't get to see you play at LSU for 1 more year but I'm proud you turned your life around. A great role model for anyone who has struggled with addictions.

Happy for TM and others close to the situation. Will always miss what could have been at LSU, but the guy is such an incredible talent and great story of perseverance and drive.

So happy for this guy. Deserves ever penny. I wanted the Saints to draft him so bad, and was pissed when they didn't. I knew he was gonna be special. But he went to the right place and has the right people around him (Peterson, Fitzgerald, etc.). Great for him and I wish him continued success, just not against the Saints, lol :)
