The Miami Heat announced this week that will retire Shaquille O'Neal's No. 32 jersey sometime at the beginning of next season.

The former LSU star played with the Heat from 2004-2008 and helped the team win their first NBA championship in 2006. He will join Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway as the only three players to have their number retired by the Heat. Per NBA.com:
quote:

“Shaquille O’Neal is one of the truly elite players in the history of the game and one of the greatest players to ever wear a HEAT uniform,” said HEAT President Pat Riley. “He took us to another level as a basketball franchise while leading us to our first NBA championship. Retiring his number in the rafters, along with HEAT greats Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway, is something we are very proud of.”

He only played in about 200 total games for the franchise.

He didn't do nearly enough there to warrant having his number retired in my opinion. He had one pretty good season there that put them over the hump and helped them win a championship, but that would be like the Celtics retiring Kevin Garnett's number.
