LSU head coach Paul Mainieri announced that shortstop Josh Smith has a stress reaction in his vertebrate and will be out indefinitely.

Smith played through the injury all weekend and had an MRI on Monday. He will be replaced by freshman Hal Hughes, according to Mainieri.

Bad news for Josh & the Tigers. Praying for a speedy recovery. Lockridge had similar issues a few years ago, he's back @ ULL now.

Sucks, but there is no point in risking this young man's health. get him the best medical care available and don't rush his return.

Not good for LSU, but I feel really bad for Smith. I hope he comes back 100%. I dealt with a vertebrae issue in high school and went through about 3 bouts of it. I kept coming back too early—with my doctor’s blessing—but the repetitive swinging and bending over taking 1000s of ground balls eventually took its toll and I’d have to sit out again. It was only after the Legion season was over when I was able to shut it down for about 6 months and rock a supportive brace that I completely overcame it. 20 years later, my body has broken down in just about every other way imaginable, but absolutely no lingering effects from my back. I hope Smith comes back just as pain free as me, but much much faster. He will undoubtedly be in much much better hands, though.

Just went through this with my son. His recovery was 8 weeks total rest, no physical activity. No surgery or medical procedures though. After that he could begin lifting but only seated stations and no lower body or running. It sux.

It will give Hughes some good experience. People will step up. Josh will be a big bump when he returns.
