yep, it's illegal in the NBA. I remember seeing Larry Bird hit a shot like that and they waved it off. Don't know why - as long as the ball doesn't hit the supports or the top of the backboard, it should be legal.

In the NBA that shot would not have counted; any ball going over the backboard is considered out of bounds and possession awarded to the non-shooting team.
