Been reading Al's blog on A Basin. They are already seeing snow with snowmaking operations possibly starting next week. Im starting to get a bit erect so time to start a new season thread.

Any folks with questions about trip planning, lodging, restaurants, we have lots of knowledgable friendly folks to answer your queries.

Im planning 3 trips as of now: Summit County mid December, Park City mid January and Tahoe possibly Mardi Gras.

See last year's thread for a plethora of info. LINK

Dont be a gaper. Death to riders.

Wow is it already here?

Super pumped, but I'm not looking forward to the I-70 traffic.

Going to Breckenridge in Feburary. First time snow skiing. Is it anything like water skiing or no? Should we get beginner lessons the first day? Also is it best to buy lift tickets online beforehand or when you get there? What website do you use if I need to buy them online?

One of the first lessons of snow skiing is that it is nothing like water skiing

100%. Can't recommend this enough. Not just the first day, but maybe a step 2/step 3 intermediate lesson on first halves of day 2 and 3 too. Beginner lessons don't teach you how to really ski. They just teach you how to avoid collisions, stand up, stay up, pizza/french fry etc.

Definitely buy them online. Depending on the number of days you need, you may want to look into buying a season pass. Buying online in advance is way cheaper either way.

Going to Arctic (Svalbard/Alta, Norway) this thanksgiving. Hoping to get some skiing in then and some other random weekends throughout the season.

If you're a beginner, absolutely yes. Get lesson/lift ticket combo packages online.

If you're intermediate/advanced, some people like to have the flexibility to hit different mountains (that may not be under the same ownership) on different days during their trip. AKA, powder chasing. If you fall under this category, you'll likely want to just buy morning of at the ticket window, or find a discount route (Shell gas receipt, buddy pass, etc). For instance, you may be staying in Copper, but if a good storm with NW flow comes through and you wake up at 530 am one morning to check the official 24 hr reports, with Vail reporting 14" (which means 20+ on the backside) and Copper reporting 5", driving 20ish minutes over to Vail would be the obvious powder hound decision.

This. You learn basic control first (speed and direction). Day 2 and 3, depending on how well you may or may not catch on, you could start getting into edges and turn radius, but not until you're very comfortable controlling your speed and direction on the runs they teach you on.

Headed to Vail the weekend after New Years. Figure it shouldn't be crowded that weekend and hopefully there's a lot of snow

Snowboarded last year for the first time after being a skier for 25 years. I'm hooked. And since I'm only a 4 hr drive to Tahoe I'll probably be there a bunch this year.

Copper booked early December.

Stay off the Urchin side of the mountain, Cosmo.

I've only skied twice in my life. I've heard that Bend is better skiing than My Hood, although Hood is definitely closer for me. Any tips on saving money, like ordering passes online? I will have three 17 year-olds with me.

Strategic use of duct tape goes a long way in making my own luck.
