Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe it’s 218 as long as the Dems vote. If they were to vote present, I believe the threshold lowers.

So there may be a world where McCarthy can cut a deal with the Dems to vote present, get his majority of votes, and assume the Speakership.

Which would be a total frick you to the Freedom Caucus and hilarious to watch unfold

McCarthy cutting a deal with Democrats seems like a move that would work out for him?

That happening is possible, but it's probably what Gaetz wants more than anything.

Someone call Mike Johnson. He needs to nominate Scalise.

I'm telling you Baws, he's a way better deal than McCarthy.

He's not.

Look whether people want to see it or not, you have to respect the now 20 members of Congress who have stated they refuse to vote without main pillars of the true America First agenda are included in the Speakers platform

This. Bongino had a really great take on it today. The Squad made big talk about not accepting Pelosi because she wasn't progressive enough then they collapsed as soon as the roll call was made.

These America First conservatives are showing a little more spine. Their voters sent them there to push for a conservative agenda, and that is exactly what they are going to do.

They won't back down until McCarthy works with democrats to pass a resolution calling for the majority vote winner to be speaker, then they will be forced to vote for him to block Jefferies.

Need some civics help here. If Jefferies were to somehow be speaker with a minority caucus, what are the main powers he would have in that scenario? Other than things like House rules, does he get to control committees I assume? Really not sure it matters. They wouldn't have the votes for the really crazy stuff they want like court packing or voting bills, and the RINOs don't get to pretend like they are forming any meaningful opposition.

I mean….the body of Congress has to vote the Rules ….and I’d hope the Repubs would vote no on his rules - it’ll be a cluster for a week or so but no Dem bill could pass (bc not enough votes) ….hopefully a consensus candidate is met with the 20 hardliners ….it looks like McCarthy is out though (ETTD) He had 7wks to secure his votes and he didn’t…i don’t see one more night helping him imho

They are Senators and pretty sure they did not vote for McCarthy. But I agree about the fire part.

He’s floundering and needs a lifeline. He can then try to paint Gaetz and then as extremists who wouldn’t work with him no matter how much he conceded.

I agree with you Gaetz and Co. would be giddy, but it may be McCarthy’s only play if Gaetz and Co. hold the line.

I like JJ. Just not sure he can pull off winning the Speaker’s chair. In a sane world, he should be a shoe-in.

I think we need to seriously consider the fact that Jordan REALLY wants chair of judiciary committee to be the tip Of the spear on many crucial oversight issues that we all care about (think three letter agencies, Fauci, et Al)

Of course the Speaker is quite powerful and serious business…so I suppose to e question would be who else could take that position and stay on the key issues the American people deserve adjudicated in Congress?

It doesn’t really matter who the Speaker is this term. Nothing the House does will be meaningful with a Democratic Senate. And no—televised theatrical “investigations” are not meaningful.

This whole ordeal only matters if the GOP keeps the House and wins the Senate next cycle.

It’s becoming about personalities now.

Barring McCarthy pulling some sort of nefarious stunt to win (cutting a deal with the Democrats), I’d guess the gig goes to Scalise. He’s not ideal, but probably the most palatable to all parties involved.

why they need to pressure him into it. The reluctant leader who has proven themselves usually turn out to be the best ones because they aren't there for power but to actually fix things.

My thoughts exactly = BUT I dont' know anything about the politics behind the scene.

does the SotH have any duties other than running the show ? - are they allowed to work in a committee and question panels themselves?? or are the restricted to just issue orders and make official announcements.

There are no actual rules governing this—only convention and parliamentary procedures that the House can change at any time.
