This guy should have just called in sick. There is no logic behind any kind of religious violation here.
I don't think you should always blindly follow orders either though. However I don't know how you could argue that working traffic and security for a gay pride rally violates your religion. Nothing they asked him to do was immoral or out of the ordinary for parade detail.

He might have a case if he can show any other cases where officers refused to work an event to which they were assigned, and no action was taken.
