Nice strong response by the police department here.

quote:

SALT LAKE CITY (TheBlaze/AP) — A Salt Lake City police officer has been placed on leave and is under investigation after refusing an assignment to work at a gay pride parade. The officer was among about 30 assigned to provide traffic control and security for the annual Utah Pride Parade on Sunday in Salt Lake City, said department spokeswoman Lara Jones.

quote:

“We don’t tolerate bias and bigotry in the department, and assignments are assignments … To allow personal opinion to enter into whether an officer will take a post is not something that can be tolerated in a police department,” Jones told KSL-TV. The officer, whose name was not released, is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation. Jones declined comment on the officer’s reason for refusing the assignment.

You would also be against said cop not working a KKK rally, correct?

Can't argue with that.

He should be in trouble. A police officer's duty is to protect civilians against violence, regardless of how he feels about them personally. Everyone is entitled to the protection of the law.

I would support him if he simply turned down the opportunity to pick up a detail for extra cash, but if he wants to be a cop he can't pick and choose which citizens are protected.

If that was his assignment, he should have shut his damned mouth and did his duty.

Yessir. Or a Christian parade, or a Muslim parade, etc.

He can practice his bigotry in his private life. Good for the SLC pd.

Agreed. Not the appropriate time to get butthurt about having to work around gays. Do your job.

He cannot discriminate when he is being paid for with public dollars. We can't allow public employees to pick what events to work and what not to. That's discrimination with public dollars.

In short, this cop is a goddamn moron. If you don't want to work an event like this, turn in your gun and badge.

Very intolerant of the police chief there...not to recognize the sensibilities of his employees. I'd be looking for a new job if the chief forced me to do something I didn't want to do.

I think the bigger story here is gay price parades in Utah.

That's the likely outcome here. Nice troll attempt btw.

Perhaps the Utah gays are attempting to beard the Mormon lion?

I wonder if the nazis used this same argument against German soldiers who disagreed with the State.

German soldiers? We use this argument with ours, and for good reason.
