I was 8 and it was a Daisy Model 25. I disassembled and cleaned it often. I used to mail order parts as necessary and it served me very well.

I was 7 or 8 when I got a plastic pump Daisy. 9 or 10 when my NOLA cousin gave me his Benjamin. My aunt said there was nowhere for him to shoot it.
I rebuilt the pump this past summer, shoots good as new. My soon to be 8 year old loves shootong it but I get to do all the pumping.
Times have changed, and where you live has alot to do with it to. I grew up outside the city limits of Bastrop. We carried our pellet guns everywhere on our bikes. My kids are growing up in suburbia. People drive too fast up and down our street to let them roam too far. And the houses are on top of each other. A kid with a pellet gun walking down the street would probably get a call to the police around here.

Oddly enough, I never had one. At least, not one for myself. Couple of my brothers had one, so I just used theirs.
My first gun was a Nylon 66, bought when I was 21 or so.

About 7. A daisy pump and a zebco rod and reel. Went straight out back and started my spree as a bird serial killer.

Pretty sure I was 6 when I got a Daisy lever action . Showed it to Grandmaw Couyon next door and she said"Boy, you and yo cousins go shoot a mess of dem Robins and Ill make y'all jambalaya. " except she said it in French. I grew up in a great place.
Cedar waxwings and robins make a hell of a jambalaya with some smoked pork sausage, yeah!

I hate to admit it, but when my brother got his .410 break action one Christmas when we were kids, we promptly took that sucker out and got us a whole mess of robins.
We cleaned 'em up before Mom could see 'em. We told her they were blackbirds. She cooked us a jambalaya too!
If she'd known they were robins, we'd have lost that gun and probably got a good tanning.
