Yellowstone for wildlife. Especially early summer. May was great for animals but there was snow everywhere still. Early June would be better unless you want to go hiking then I would go first part of September. Yellowstone has good scenery but not like Tetons or Glacier park. I've never been to ...

I can hike in shorts and tee shirt with temps in the 30's. When I stop is when I need warm gear. So you are correct layer so you can dial in what works for you. Good socks and maybe a second pair to change into after you get back to car. Bring extra stuff first day hike and that will let you kno...

You day hiking or camping at backcountry sites? For temps take the forecast for Gatlinburg and subtract 2-3 degrees per thousand foot elevation gain. So lows in the 40's in Gatlinburg may mean 30 or lower at elevation. Talk to rangers about water. Bad drought in the area means some water sour...
