Why? They chose the job. Even the worst waitress will never go home with less than minimum wage.

Restaurants are usually exempt from minimum wage laws. Waitresses make almost nothing without tips.

This
Always give at least 10%, unless they just completely ignore the table.

After going to Europe I have a renewed appreciation for waiters in the US. In some of those countries you about have to cook your food.

The one thing noone really thinks about when you tip is most of the time the server doesn't even keep it all. There's usually a tip out to hosts/ bartenders. Mine is 3.5% and it's based on sales so I could actually lose money if tipped low enough.

One thing I've heard of people doing, is when they sit down and the waiter comes over, a tip is put on the table, lets say $20 in ones. Customer tells waiter, "that's your tip, i expect to be taken care of or I start deducting",ie tea glass gets less than half full before being refilled.

those are pretty fricked up. I feel bad for servers sometimes
I always take care of a server. Always say please and thank you and I try to get their name so I don't have to say "Hey, you!" If you treat people with respect, usually you'll get reciprocated. They don't have the easiest job.

I waited tables for 6 years and I've gotten a few of those. None are funny. I think everyone should have to wait tables for a week just to see what the shite they put up with.

I usually tip 20%, hell if its a $10.00 meal I will just leave a $5. These guys are usually working to put themselves through school/trade school and I appreciate them working for money rather than getting hand outs from Uncle Sugar (taxpayer).

re: 12 Meanest Ways to Tip Your Waiter

My 2 cents. I'm a chef. I have, and will always, speak my mind to a waiter about their service. To put it simply, the kitchen is the heart and soul, the managers are the brain, and those weak paid college kids are our face.
Their job is to be our salesmen (women) , and give people the impression that they (customers) will be taken care of. The last two places I've worked the waiters have been paid minimum wage +tips, but before that (12 years) it was standard $2.13 +tips.
I have not seen a difference in quality of waiter.
In every dining establishment there are good people trying to make a buck and others that got lucky and never respect the gravity they possess. That goes from dishwasher, to waiter, to chef, to owner.
I believe these funny tips were probably deserved by shitty waiters. The responses seem personal towards service and not quality of food.

As far as the "find a better job" response by some posters, frick you. Waiters are %88 a part time job. Kids and young adults just trying to pay bills while they put themselves through school, temporary layoffs, or general bad luck. The ones that fall in love with the service industry "move up" to management and worry about the next crop getting their tips.

I clicked on that hoping to see some examples that were clever.

But vast majority were a fail. Just makes the people look like cheap and unhappy a-holes.

I'm certain both of my places of employment would make them leave for that.

And if they are receiving their bill they would be doing what anyways?

Is your manager gonna catch them on the way out of the door. "Hey you, you needa get outta here. NOW!"

re: 12 Meanest Ways to Tip Your Waiter

Perhaps that should be addressed. At one time a fair tip was 10%, then 15%, and now 18%, who comes up with the notion of what a fair tip is?

If I am with a demanding party then I have no problem with leaving a generous tip. However, I have a problem with the idea that I sit down with my family and order a meal. We eat the meal without any extra service, no asking for anything, and no refills on drinks and now I am expected to pay $15.00 for 2 minutes of work. I do it because I feel the pressure of not being an ass, but it bothers me. We are going to Disney World next year and you are charged 18% gratuity on parties of six or more at buffets and are expected to tip at that rate if your party is five or less which is BS in my mind especially when you consider the inflated prices there and the fact you get you own f'ing food.

I generally overtip but I would have a real problem with that one.
