With how they missed on Penning, and a lot of picks over the years, the Saints don’t have the luxury of taking value in the draft considering the state of the roster. That’s just the truth. Doesn’t make it right. Doesn’t make it wrong, either. I just don’t know if you can make a “value” statement on a player or a position without them having played a snap in the league yet. If the Saints nailed a Pro Bowl guard with that pick, or even if he’s just an 10 year starter, are we really going to be complaining?

They need to hit on picks. I think they hit on Fuaga, even if he has to slide to guard. That’s something I’m OK with considering the circumstances. Fuaga is going to be successful no matter what position he’s at.

GS, as a hall of fame saints talk poster I got nothing but love for you. Fuaga is 1000% a tackle.

I know him moving to guard is just discussion but nothing about him besides a few scouting blurbs suggests he’s a guard to me

Yeah if he ends up washing out at OT someone some group needs thrown out the door.

And there was the thread last night on several successful Tackles currently playing that have arms as short as Fuaga. But that’s beside the point

As bad as OL play has been - and not just here but across the league - I don’t think the old value of guard not being valuable just can’t be viewed the same as it used to. If you’re able to hit on an above average OL, regardless of position, that has to be viewed as a win. OL play has been so so bad across the entire NFL. It played a huge part in offense being down across the NFL this past year

The tape looks fine to my eyes but it's a different animal in the league. I think it's important to note what guys who actually study and coach the OL position are saying. We are the team that misidentified Peat, Ruiz, and Penning, after all.

Again, this isnt my opinion. The only "take" i'll offer is, the need to for a OT has been stressed to death and rightfully so. If he misses, you still need to find a tackle. Guards are not as hard to find. I dont think anyone would have taken a guard over Turner, Murphy, Latu, Verse etc. It's not like we are only hurting at one position. You just hope we never need to have that conversation

Peat is a 9-year pro with 3 pro bowls. Hopefully we miss that bad on every pick this draft.

Misidentified, not missed. As in you thought he was your tackle of the future and not a guard who only ended up starting 69% of possible games.

You took him at 1.13 then had to turn around and burn another pick on a tackle only two years after. There are a bunch of positions to account for on the field, we dont have the luxury to miss on top draft picks

Peat has played like a mid round pick & he has not matched his play with what the Saints have paid him. No one cares about pro bowls anymore. When you consider draft capital & guaranteed money given & used for him, it can only really make you angry

fuaga will be, at the least, a solid RT that can start for the length of his contract. that's a win, at the least.

most starting RTs in the nfl aren't perfect prototypical tackles. it's just not feasible. armstead didn't have prototypical traits at tackle either.

Damn. I didn't see that.

No, don't like that.

And this is why it's best to have more picks in the draft.

The tackle puni is a guy I think could start at lt. I also think the Yale tackle could hit. He has everything. Just don't know about the competition

To me, and I’ve mentioned this last night, it doesn’t really matter if he’s a guard or tackle. The team needs talent and he’s a talented player. Even the guys who say he’s better off at guard say he’s a sure fire starter from day 1.

Whether that’s at OT or OG, who knows, but he’s going to be a starter. I just want the pick to hit, no matter if it’s at guard or tackle.

Of course we all want the pick to hit. You only get so Many opportunities to draft that high in a draft where 6 qbs are picked in the first 12.

I can guarantee you the saints aren't saying "well its fine if he is a guard" . They need a tackle and need him to hit at tackle.

The Colts drafting Latu tells me a lot, because they value RAS and athleticism more than even we do, and they thought he was the pick at edge, which says a lot to me.

For what it's worth, Fuaga manhandled Latu when they played against each other last year. - held him to zero solo tackles and blew up holes in the run game.

To me he moves a lot quicker and smoother than latham or Fashanu. He is the 2nd best tackle in my opinion.

In other words, he really cannot play tackle full time but if needed you can get by with him at tackle

Dude didn’t give up a sack in over 700 snaps but he can’t play T at the next level

Baldy loved Penning (and Ruiz) too, so much he was mocking him in the top 5 picks. None of these guys are infallible

I still think he’s credible and that’s good to hear from him. Though he isn’t foolish enough to totally dismiss a guys length. Keep an even head on these guys, it save for the melts if it doesn’t work out
