Can anyone explain to me why the Falcons did go Penix in Round 1?

It would at least make some sense if Penix was a project and not ready to go.

Has anyone mentioned that being a lefty makes the transition more difficult? Blocking schemes are quite a bit different.

Cousins coming off injury and is 35

They don’t want to pay 6 or 8 million for a veteran backup.

If old Cousins goes down, people still go to the games to see the youngster play.

Leverage in contract negotiations down the road with Cousins.

The didn’t know the rookie would be available to them when FA rolled around.

Because they just gave $90 million to Cousins.

Season ticket holders will come to the game regardless. If Cousins goes down and the team sucks, no one else is going to the games just to see Michael Penix. And he's more injury-prone than Cousins anyway.

He's on his last major deal. They aren't bringing him back after drafting Penix.

They didn't think Penix--a consensus 2nd or 3rd round pick--would be available at #8 overall?

Did you think Nix would go at 12?

Or 6 of the first 12 picks would be QBs?

Yeah. That was the pick for the Broncos in a bunch of mocks (and it was still a shitty pick).

I thought 5 of the first 12 picks would be QBs. Literally no one besides the Falcons had Penix at #8.

There is a reason that he isn't a GM in the League anymore.

People keep comparing this to the Rodgers/Love situation but what made those moves smart is Green Bay had QBs expected to be top 5 picks fall all the way to them in the last few picks of the 1st round. They got great value. The Falcons reached for a guy most considered as a mid round talent as if they were desperate for immediate QB help. If Penix fell to the 2nd or 3rd round and the best of your board was gone, maybe take him. But not when you had the chance to take your pick of any defensive player in the entire draft.

Penix isn’t a project. He played 6 years of college ball with a ton of reps. He is either ready right now as the elite talent you think he is to take him at 8, or he never will be. As a Falcons fan, I’d honestly love for Cousins to raise hell and demand a trade and see if a team like the Giants would give up a 2nd and 3rd for him.

This. He's not a high-upside project you draft at #8 to sit and learn behind Cousins for two years. He is what he is already.

Bad organizations stay bad

It’s usually owners steering the stupidest of choices but ATL deserves everything they ask for.

When the best thing a franchise has going for it is the cheap concession stand prices it says everything you need to know.

To answer my question, Cousins has a full NMC.

Would he waive it now? Who knows.

He's right though. I like how he mentioned they took luxury pick last year too. Tyler Algiers just had a great rookie 1000+ yds 5.0 ypc and they take a RB top 10.

Falcons fans should hate this GM far more than anybody talking about him.

I could maybe support Drake Maye at #8 if he happened to fall that far. A project with #1 overall talent who needs a couple years learning from a veteran. But not Penix.

The frustrating part as a fan is the Falcons got insanely lucky. There was such a QB frenzy that our #8 pick was essentially the equivalent of a #1 pick for a defense needy team. They could have locked down their pass rush the next decade with a guy like Dallas Turner.

Penix is going to be a much better pro than Maye.
