Does anyone have suggestions for a 3 wt rod and reel for around $300? I've never thrown anything lighter than a 5, but I'm looking at getting something to take to some mountain streams in the Smokies but also play with some smaller fish on some slightly larger water like Lower Mountain Fork. I'm a fan of all things TFO. I know that they have some 3wt Pro Series for $160, but don't know how the fast action on that rod would work on a 3wt.

Echo or blue halo. I'm a bit of a rod snob, but I love these two builders. Both make a fantastic fiberglass rod but Echo builds a solid little 7'6" carbon 3 wt that happens to be one of my all time favorites. If you can find an Orvis Access full flex 3wt, that is also a good one.

Obviously, go cast whatever you can get your hands on. There are a few TFO rods that are more moderate than the Pro series. Check with Green Trout fly shop, he should be able to hook you up.

Thanks for the input. The blue halo's are great looking rods, and I've seen really good reviews, but I'd have trouble putting down $280 for a rod with no warranty. They do have an awesome instagram page so there's that haha. I'll look into the Echo's. I still haven't been down to Green Trout and I live less than a mile from there. That may be on the agenda tomorrow.

I have a bunch of St Croix fly rods that I built. One of them is one of my favorite rods. It's an 8.5ft 3wt. Looking at their website they have an 8.5ft and 7ft in 3wt that you can buy for ~$250.

Not sure these are the same as mine but I'd guess they are as mine are 15yrs old.

Don't you have an 8 wt. Heliod H2? How do like it. Asking because I have the opportunity to pick one up and I'm kicking around an 8 wt or 12 wt...maybe even a 14 wt for offshore use.
I have a Recon 8 wt and enjoy the rod, how different is it from the Helios?

How's it going boys? I posted earlier in the thread about going to Ozark National Forest and Little Red River. My brother and I decided to backpack around Eagle Rock Loop next weekend. We are going to try and squeeze in some fishing along the trail, since we are familiar with the Little Missouri River. Any of you guys ever done the trail?

Just got back from several days in smoky mountain national park. I'm fricking exhausted. Friday Saturday and Sunday were hot, 95 in the park. Fishing was slow except riffle and deep pools. Cooled off a lot last night, dropped down into the 50's was around 60 this morning when I started. Lost a big trout in a deep pool right off. The native trout were tearing it up in the faster moving currents. If I could get my fly in front of them they would hit it.
Had a lot of fun. Still learning, casting is much better, still struggle with setting the hook, I keep trying to rip their faces off like a bass.

if you're in the smokies go to the Little River Outfitters, those guys are awesome and very knowledgable. Had a free lesson for about 12 people Sunday afternoon.

Did some wet wading in Pisgah national forest. It was really hot and fish were not cooperating like I'd hoped. Managed I think 3 browns and about 8 creek chub. It's been interesting adjusting to my new fishing grounds. Haven't fished this hot a weather in a long time.

Where in Pisgah? I was at Black Mountain campground a few weeks back. Saw a few creeks that looked good but I didn't have any fly fishing stuff with me.

Going middle of October for sure. May go back in again in September. Maybe it cools off some. I covered a good bit of ground this weekend, most of it this morning. Saturday was mostly me falling, getting line tangled, snagging trees, etc, I went about 1/4 mile in 3 hours Sunday was a bit better and this morning I was casting well and could wade like a damn ninja covered 2.5 miles by lunch.

South fork mills river north of Davidson river. Required a bit more hiking which is why I chose it. Many of the reports indicated that my experience was typical. Still a good day hiking and got 4 miles in

Haven't been fishing much lately because of all this flood shite. Got out in the gale this weekend and caught a few.

Paging Barf. You threw the Marshfly journeyman huh?

I'm looking at getting a 7wt or another 8wt and that one caught my eye. Review?

It's a fun rod for $350. Comparable to a Recon or Scott Tidal. Call them up, they will send you a demo rod for a small deposit.

I am almost certain they use an American built blank but I have no conformation on that. The hardware is nice for a rod in that price range. Pretty cool people too, so that counts for something.

Going to the Smokies this weekend to try to catch some backcountry brook trout. Also going after some stockers at some point to keep the gf interested . They just got some rain so the flows are up and the temperatures are dropping over today through the weekend so hopefully we'll hit it right.

Thanks for the recs on 3wt rods. I found a deal that I couldn't pass up on an Echo Glass 6'9" 3 wt. It's a really sweet little rod. Can't wait to get something hooked up with it soon.

Have you thrown a Meridian? If so, how would you compare it to that?
