Caught some rainbows in Colorado earlier this summer, struck out in the reds so far, and I just bought a rig for bull reds/jacks that im patiently waiting to use.

Also curious as to what you got.

I picked up an Orvis Encounter 5# 9' for my trip to Utah. Seems like it's probably too light to use on much around here besides some perch

I’d throw that for slot reds in cooler weather or summer if you plan on keeping them. I use my 6wt the most for redfish when I’m not bull fishing.

There's a reason why I recommend a 6wt over a 5wt for an all rounder rod. I use mine pretty much everywhere. From small creeks to big rivers for trout, farm ponds and lakes for bream and bass, to light saltwater I almost always use my 9' 6wt. I can cast anything from 22 dries to big honking articulated streamers with it.

10wt Allen kraken on a redington predator rod. It’s mainly for winter time bulls as I know it’s on the lighter side for jacks, but I wanted something I could use for both.

That’ll be fine for jacks. I use my 10wt over my 12wt nine times out of ten for Jacks. We were fishing a tournament 2 weeks ago where you had to get jacks to hand within 10 minutes and we got two in less than 7 minutes each using the 10wts. You can really put a lot of pressure on the fish with those rods.

I assume Blackjack? I plan to fish it next year. Also hoping to fish Sheepy tournament if I can find a boat besides my bay boat.

Yeah blackjack. We ended up winning it. Got lucky I think.

The sheepy is fun too. I’ll be fishing it next year most likely in a buddys skiff unless I can crank out my build by then but it’s highly unlikely. Worse comes to worst I’ll fish it in the bay boat.

I bought the same rig this spring. Caught some rainbows in Georgia in April and bunch of fish in Glacier NP last month. Been having a blast with it.

I've yet to fish any but our new property has a 8-9 acre lake on it. It's loaded with bass (maybe too many but that's a problem for later).

I have to clean up the dam, but once that's done or I get a boat, I will get out there with the fly rod and play some.

Main reason I post this I've been seeing a bunch of mayfly. Not so many that they're covering the trees or anything but walking down the dam and they're flying up. I've never seen then in a pond or lake that I can remember. The lake is pretty deep. We actually don't know the depth. My son dropped his anchor which has a 25' rope and it didn't hit bottom.

What do they look like? Big and white/cream? What's the bottom substrate of the pond, sand?

Yes. Bottom is pretty much all clay.

Sounds like you've got Hexagenias and that's awesome. When they are hatching/emerging you'll slay fish with a small (size 8-10) cream woolly bugger.

This the bug?

If so, here's the nymph.

They typically burrow in sand, but if you've got mostly a clay bottom, I'd bet you've got some springs in the bottom of the pond where there's a little bit of sand. But that's a guess.

10wt is fine for jacks. I have broken two but I fight them really hard.

1 piece 11wt is best. 12 is great too I just hate casting them.

The one pic I have sucks as the camera is not focused on the mayfly. I’ll try to get another next time I’m there.
