I've messed around with one but I don't own one. Not really sure you can compare the two rods. One is a thousand dollar rocket launcher and the other is built in some guys garage in Texas. I like the Meridian just fine but I find it to be a little much for redfish. I prefer a little less arse in my 8wts.

Most of my fishing is done with an H2 and the occasional Solar, just to give you an idea of what my preferences are.

I agree, but I love it. That's kinda why I'm looking at a 7wt. I haven't fished for big fish with the Meridian yet though, so we'll see if my mind changes this fall. It's my favorite 8wt I've thrown so far though.

The big girls are certainly moving in, we saw some pigs last time out.

Never really messed with 7wt's too much. I'm probably missing out but I've always gone for a super fast 5's and 6's over a 7wt's. No particular reason. The three rods that never leave my boat are an 8wt 1 piece H2, Solar 8wt, and an H2 6wt

I haven't even checked. You normally fish the west side of the river, right?

eta: if you had to compare that Journeyman to a rod I may have thrown, what would you compare it to?

Yes. For the most part anyway. I don't mind doing the Hopedale shuffle. Especially not this time of year.

That's a tough one. I'd have to say Recon or maybe the Xi2? At least with the 8wt line I like to use. You might could get something like a bonefish line if you wanted it to feel a little faster.

I try to avoid the parade if I'm going outside.

I've thrown the Xi2 with Bermuda Triangle taper and liked it. That's my favorite 8wt line. I'm on the ropes. I want either a 7 or another 8wt before I go back to the Bahamas next month. I might holler at them and see if they're down to send me a demo to try out.

What is special about Bermuda Triangle line? Looks like it's made for high heat? Should I get this for summer flats carp fishing in freshwater? Or just some regular warm water bass line? I'm now in the south and very new to warm water fishing

I just like it. I think I've fished every major line brand except Cortland and it's my favorite floating line. It loads really well but carries far when needed. Super versatile. It's also a really smooth line and hardly ever knots. I've caught a pretty solid variety of different fighting and different size fish with it, and it's handled all of them fine.

There are other lines just as good I'm sure, but like I said, I just like it. I'm also really used to the taper and cast it better than most other lines, but I spend the most time fishing with it.

I highly recommend it. Wulff has a good thing going with the triangle taper. Especially if you're trying to put it on an 8wt.

Yes that is my intention. I'll give her a try

Btw: I am now like a few hours from the carolinas coast. Shoot me a line if you ever go that way. I can tow my boat down that way. It's a 16ft aluminum, camo, G3 boat but no casting platform. Not sure if it would be possible to do one and the trolling motor at the same time

Bones? You could probably get away with something a little slower like the journeyman in October. I wouldn't be afraid to throw a 6 wt glass rod in my gear bag. October is a relatively calm month

A little historical data for kicks

Indeed. Heading to Cat Island this time. Possibly Acklins in the spring. Where'd you pull that graph from? Our mutual friend got blown out in Eleuthera earlier this year. I went three weeks after him and had great weather. It only blew more than 15mph one day and it was still very manageable.

Here are some photos from this past weekend. I'm so sick of the damn weather. Friday was solid even with the high water. I didn't fish long Saturday because of the tigers, but it was okay too. Sunday was crap.

Those are from weather spark. I think George town is going to be the closest area to draw historical data.

Thanks. Surfline is also a good resource for tides. I've never used MSW or Surfline for fishing trips, but Surfline has always been fairly accurate for us on surf trips to different places.

I planned this trip to Cat around the neap. I get there pretty early afternoon on a Friday, so I'll be able to watch it that afternoon into the night to get an idea how accurate the online tide tables are.

This is what I normally use for places not listed elsewhere:

Went to the Smokies this weekend to test out my new Echo Glass 3wt and to try to get my girlfriend her first fish on a fly. The rod was a ton of fun to cast and she got a wild rainbow as her first on a fly. The weather and scenery were both amazing. Conditions for teaching someone to fly fish weren't . The rhododendron, close quarters, and spooky wild fish made it far from easy fishing. Still we had plenty of strikes and managed to land a handful of fish. I'd forgotten how pretty that area is.

The Little River. It was pretty low from what I could tell, even for this time of year.

The trails along the river were very nice and made it easy to walk the bank and pick out some good holes.

This was one of the more open holes that we fished.

My first Brookie in a long time

Her first trout on a fly

Went to a bar in Gatlinburg to watch the game. As terrible as it was, I found solace in the fact that at least I'm not a Bama fan.

This little guy smashed a size 20 Parachute Adams just a few hundred feet below the Appalachian Trail.

This is the hole the above fish came out of. It was one of the bigger spots on the creek and was still maybe the size of a bathtub.

Stopped by Cades Cove on the way home.

Looks like a great weekend. Love the comment about trying to teach someone how to fish those conditions. It always surprises people how much time they spend trying to get their line off things in those tight quarters when they aren't use to it.

That's awesome. Thanks for sharing the pics. It's many many many years since I've been to the Smokies, did y'all camp out there?
