Find some old board games that have the miniatures or just make some kind of markers. There's a ton of games that come with miniatures. Hero Quest and Talisman are two that come with a lot and a good variety of miniatures. Also look on eBay for bulk miniatures. ...

Washing the carcass with the water hose is fine. Good grief. You are really washing it to remove any hair, fecal matter etc and some bacteria can be removed too.
