Ok, fellas

Going up to SD/ WY/ MN to do some hunting this fall and will also get a chance to do a little fly fishing. In Wyoming, I will be doing day trips hiking while hunting and would like to bring a 4 or 5 piece rod with me. I going to stay on the cheap side of things but was wondering what line weight you fellas would suggest? 3/4 or 5/6 ? and what line type. I normally use a weight forward taper floating line with mono shock leader and flouro tippit.

And then suggestions of fly selection? I have a couple of months to get ready so I could tie a handful of patterns before the trip.

Assuming you already have a collection of the usual/reliable types of flies...

When approaching situations like this I always do searches for fly shops near the water I'm going to. Try to find archived fishing reports for the water you're going to and go back to previous years at the time you'll be going. Most will list what they were using and in what size.

Look at fishing reports on Orvis, they normally have specific fly suggestions for a given body of water. I did something similar when going to broken bow.

It might have been discussed but how was your trip to broken bow? I've wanted to make that trip from BR for a couple of years but haven't had the time?

Also, a PSA to those in this thread, the sheepshead fishing between Fourchon and Grand Isle is fantastic right now. They are very wary and hard to convince but they are tailing in the grass this time of the year. I took the paddle board out there last weekend and it honestly reminded me of a Bonefishing trip from last year. Tails and backs out the water as the peck at grass shrimp in on the banks. Tons of sheepshead, some good shots but only a couple hook ups and landings.

PSA, and I'm sure some of you already shop here, but Stillwater fly shop online has some badass deals. They run a lot of package deals- order X and get Y for 90% off type thing. I ordered a galvan reel last night and got a roll of Airflo tropical punch line (84.99 msrp) for $13. They also have a rewards program so you get 10% cash back in the form of "loyalty points" that can be redeemed 30 days after purchase

I hope you like it. I tried both that and the Ridge Clear Tip and hated both.

Fly line choice is definitely subjective, but for redfish, I prefer Wulff Bermuda triangle taper. I've thrown SA, Airflo, Orvis textured and non-textured, and Rio lines. I like Rio and Wulff the best, and I prefer the Wulff triangle taper to the Rio redfish and bonefish lines. I have Rio GT on my 10wt for jacks.

I know a lot of people like Airflo, but the stuff is like weedeater string and it knots like hell. Line management on the bow of my boat was so hard with that stuff. I think it would be a much better wading line than boat line.

I haven't bought any fly line in a while but I've always been a fan of SA and Rio.

They all make good products. If you clean and condition your lines regularly they will last years regardless of brand. A clean line casts and mends so much better than a dirty line.

Glad you reminded me of this. What does everyone use to clean/condition? I admit I neglet my lines and really want to be on top b/c I just recently replaced my 3wt and 5wt with Rio gold. Too expensive to let it go downhill

I'm not super anal about it. When my lines get dirty I'll soak them in soapy water in the sink, rinse, then wind the whole spool through a rag. Airflo Whizz Lube is good shite too, but it doesn't last for long.

Any suggestions on sinking tippet or leader? Should I just use fluorocarbon?

depends on what you are doing. Just trying to help your nymphs get down a little faster, a fluro leader is probably a good way to go. Big streamers often benefit from a sink tip line of some sort if you're trying to get them down faster, but which one can depend on different factors.

Hey sorry for the delay but I only went to Broken Bow once and that was last September and the conditions were pretty rough. I know they got worse in December but I think they have picked back up because some of my buddies have gone fishing up there and done pretty well. I might go soon though.

I wanted to see if anyone here had recommendations for good locations around Little Rock? I am going up there this October for a long weekend for a concert with my brother and we want to do some camping and fishing as well. Thanks in advance for suggestions
