I have a pair of Simms gore-tex waders and boots that I love. They were a gift and are probably 15 years old.

I couldn't recommend them enough. I'm not too easy on waders either.

Got an 8 wt setup on the way.

3-tand TF-70 reel in black, TFO BVK rod.

Looks like picture not working on my phone. I'll post a picture later

The BVK impressed the shite out of me today. Pics to come. 8wt put a surprising amount of pressure on a pig of a jack.

Made it to Montana for the salmon fly hatch. We were actually a week or so late, but we caught one area of the Madison river that had a few small hatches while we were there.

This is a salmon fly if you were wondering.

Here are a couple of the salmon flies we threw. They're pretty large, most were sizes 4 or 6. All dry flies if you can't tell.

This fly - the "sidewinder" - was the best fly we threw all trip. It looks the least like a salmon fly, but I think it looks different from what most people throw during the salmon fly hatch.

And here are a few of the fish we caught.

That's so sick. We were pretty much hand feeding big jacks behind a shrimp boat yesterday and I was thinking that was the time to catch one on a fly rod.

Incredible pics. Can you give some more specifics? Just on the Madison? What areas? Guideed or no?

We stayed on the Gallatin River about 10 miles south of big sky. Found the place on VRBO. Little cabin with no TV or service, but that's kind of what we were looking for. It's 10 yards from the river. Apparently there is good fishing on the Gallatin, but nobody was catching fish while we were there. We caught a few small rainbows there but that's it.

The Madison River was great. We caught our biggest fish on the upper Madison between West Yellowstone and Ennis. There is a lot of river to fish. Some great stretches in there. Eagle's nest is a good spot to start, then you can find water nearby that you like.

No guide, all wade fishing.

Very nice and I'm glad you posted. I'm relocating to CLT soon and will be switching from steelhead/salmon fishing in NY to chasing carp from my boat.

What's your set up in boat/fly rod/flies for this?

I have a 16 ft aluminum G3 boat with side console, 40hp yamaha and trolling motor. I think I will be able to sight cast for carp without a tower and push pole like the saltwater flats guys. Looks like you aren't fishing from one either.

Any particular fly line, leader, tippet set up you prefer? Do you have to strip-strike these guys? That is a technique I do not have down at all.

Any forums you'd recommend? I'll likely be hitting Lake Wylie but can do some traveling if needed.

PS: nice job getting the Pabst in the pic.

I have a center console fiberglass skiff. It get's really skinny which comes in handy but no poling platform. I use the trolling motor and cast off the bow. Your boat will be fine just be sure to be quite in the aluminum.

Spotting fish is a matter of finding "mud" plumes and then watching/waiting for the fish to move some so you can figure out which way the fish is facing then drop a weighted nymph/carp fly in its path. They really aren't selective in my experience - as long as it looks like a big nymph or small crayfish they will take it. The key is it has to sink fast but not make too much commotion when cast.

These have probably been my most consistent producers

I use a 7wt with a standard 9ft 12lb bass leader. Could use a 5wt but I like using the 7wt as practice for Reds. You don't have to strip strike as their mouths are super soft. I usually do try to however.

Here's a good article.

I have never been to Lake Wylie but i'm sure it has fishable carp populations. I'm up 85 in the triad area and every lake around here has them - some just more than others.

If you have questions about NC shoot me an email at my username @gmail.com

There has been some quality shite the last couple pages not just beginners asking questions ( which I get enough on other forums). That inspired me

Thanks for posting. I've done a little of it in the past but it's been a little while.

I don't have a boat at the moment so it's kinda hard to find them.

Also, I found my kids what seems to be a pretty good set-up. It's a Redington 8.5" 5wt. Paired it with a Cabela's Reel.

Going to work with my son tonight when I get home on casting.

We're heading to the little red this weekend.

This is a huge help. Thank you.

I've been looking for an excuse to snag a 6 or 7wt. My 8 is good but is a bit much for bass fishing. The 5 might be too low for these guys though I use it for smallies. I'll probably just bring both until I can get the 6 or 7.

Ended up picking up the encounter package from orvis. Been catching a few bream and bass every evening once little booux goes to bed.

I probably screwed up 50 shots at tailing/feeding carp before I actually got one. It takes a bit to figure them out. Keep on trying! Also - don't waste time on cruising fish. If their head isn't down on the bottom you aint gonna catch em (unless they are feeding on top which I have yet to see yet).

I got an email from the dealer I purchased my 8 wt reel from. They're out of stock on the 3-tand TF-70 but can have me one in 2 weeks. I can also back out of the purchase.

Only reason I would back out would be to get the next size up (3-tand TX-80).

TF-70 is a 6-8 wt reel that can be spooled with WF8F 150/20lb Dacron

TX-80 is a hybrid large arbor 8-10 wt that can be spooled with WF8F 250/20lb Dacron or WF8F 200/30lb Dacron.

OK with the price difference but wanted to get some input before I told them what I wanted.

Big weight difference between those two. Nearly 3 ounces. That's a lot of weight to gain for more backing
