That is the part that makes me skeptical that he is okay. If I were in that situation (not that I would be), I would be SURE to put on the PFD before I tried to climb onto a rig (or anything else). I would probably also tie the yak to the rig. Finally, once on the rig, if I took off the PFD, it would probably be ON the rig. Still keeping my fingers crossed, though.

I broke down in an airboat working south of Houma a couple years ago and they helped me out. I was about 3 miles from the Houma Navigational Canal, which was the closest an outboard could get to me. I talked to the sheriff's dept on my cell, and told them where we would be walking out. A couple hours later when we got to the canal a deputy was in a boat waiting to bring us back to my truck. He offered to bring me back the next day if I thought I could repair the boat. I went to Auto Zone to get some new belts,a pulley, and some bolts that night. The next day we met at the landing and he dropped me back off at the spot he picked me up at so that I could walk back to my boat to fix it and drive it out. Top-notch deputies in Terrebonne Parish.

I was on a boat that flipped over offshore and we climbed up onto a platform. Platform was unmanned so I shut the rig in (yep oil and gas co. not too happy bout that) but there were no other boats around and no way to communicate w/ a manned platform (before days of offshore cell service and boat flipped quickly so no chance to radio a mayday etc). I hope and pray the kayaker made it to a platform and based on timeline, the platform must unmanned and shut in so he might be tough to locate. Thoughts and prayers to the family
Lessons learned from this was to always have a ditch bag – waterrpoof bag w/ cell phone, handheld vhf (w/ good batteries), maybe an epirb if you are in a remote area, and a few survival items. Bag has to be handy so you can grab it quick because when it goes bad it generally goes bad quick

Shut in the rig means shutting down the flow from the wells It sets off alarms in the SCADA systems at manned platform, they come over to investigate. Pretty quick too based on my experience

Although unlikely, given the circumstances of finding the kayak with the PFD on board, I would think they might have to rule out suicide.

Always keep a couple of bottles of water in your ditch bag (depending on the size of your bag) and throw some small energy bars & sunscreen/lip balm in there as well.
Personally the larger the ditch bag the better. The ditch bag I have on my boat also has a pair of flippers attached on the outside of the bag.
An event like this also highlights the importance of always having your life jacket on no matter how good of a swimmer you are. 3 miles in the open ocean against waves & currents is

I know most plants have a big red "oh shite" button. When pressed everything comes down. I'm sure platforms have one somewhere.

I think most of the shut off valves are square about 12 inches by 12 inches and say shut off in case of emergency or something like that and have a plunger like button to press. Just metal plunger button although maybe some are possible coated with red plastic.
