I can't really imagine this guy being in real serious danger. He's probably just too far out to paddle back and is waiting for some help.

That was eerie to read.

I bet he's still alive.

A charter boat captain encountered a kayak fisherman in a red sit-on-top several miles from shore yesterday. The captain spoke with the man who identified himself as "Eric" and asked if the man needed any assistance. "Eric" reportedly told the captain this was his second(?) trip in the kayak. The man assure the captain he was doing fine and they parted ways.

One lesson is that if you have any plan to go offshore out of land sight you should carry a radio and some navigation equipment.

I definitely would not go in the gulf alone. I feel perfectly safe in roadside marsh but i just couldn't risk getting dragged out to sea.

Lots of people are starting to do this Kayak offshore thing. I first heard of it years ago on the west coast and it has been growing in popularity and now i know guys that are doing it in the gulf. They go a few miles offshore in these things. To scary for me to try and I am not what i would call faint of heart.

He would have to be really injured/sick or eaten by sharks to not be alive at this point. A 12' kayak doesn't just sink to the bottom.

I plan on doing it at some point. I'll have a boat with a motor somewhere around me.

Would be a must for going offshore. I imagine they are waterproof so even if you flip it could still be activated.

Better have more than a boat near.

most VHF radios are waterproof.

I went out in the Gulf last weekend for the first time. I only went about 200 yards off the beach and had my family on the beach as spotters.

My dad is buying me a VHF radio for Christmas and I am also going to mount a compass on my kayak somehow so I know which way is North.

I will never go off the beach without a buddy, or spotters on the beach.

I was gonna take my buddies offshore in their kayaks this summer but never got around to it. I was just gonna strap the yaks to my t-top and carry them out. I wanted to see one hook up with something and pull them all around
