Well, is today the day that USCG would decide to downscale the search to recovery?

How do timelines for this work?

Somebody with LE, or other prior knowledge, let me know about that.

I really hope he is alive, but do y'all think that is the case. They said on the news last night that there were 4-6's out there with that strong east wind.

I was gonna take my buddies offshore in their kayaks this summer but never got around to it. I was just gonna strap the yaks to my t-top and carry them out. I wanted to see one hook up with something and pull them all around
This would be the ONLY way to do it imo. Have a safe boat right there with you. Otherwise, stay the frick inshore you moron.

I think today is really important if he is.

This isn't the day I would stop trying to get rescued, or rescue him.

I saw alot of moisture in the Gulf. So, he could have collected some water if he got rained on last night. That may have bought him another day.

I'm hoping he pulls through.

I've been a mile or so offshore in a 16 foot jon boat many times. However, I don't ever really relax offshore in a small boat. I do what I go to do (usually fish a platform or two) then go back in. You have to watch the weather and be aware of whether a current is pulling you one way or another. Many times I've had to book it back in with through chop when a cloud pops up. While I take some chances, I would never go that far out on paddle or pedal power alone and sure as hell wouldn't linger.

At this point, doubtful.

If this was the same kayaker seen by the Charter Captain mentioned earlier in the thread, and it was indeed his second trip out in the kayak, then I highly doubt he was fully prepared for anything that could happen.

Was it his second trip with the kayak or his second trip out into the Gulf? I think we're reading farther into that statement than we should be at this point. You may be right, though. I'm sure his family and friends have informed the Coast Guard of his level of experience.

It's great when you have a professional wrestler on TV doing dumb shite while fishing, which makes it seem somewhat safer for whatever reason. My parents shared the "skishing" episode with me and all I could do was shake my head.

If they do it on tv it must be safe. Yeah right!

What they don't show on tv is the 35 foot Contender carrying the cameramen 20 yards away.

Yup. I really wish my parents wouldn't watch that crap. I know they think it's dumb, but watching it justifies its existence.

A self rescue/ wet re-entry in those conditions is very difficult if he was in a sit in kayak. unless he practiced it for months and in those conditions he could not have gotten back in the boat. Even if he had a spray skirt, those waves would hve rolled him unless he could keep the now into the waves. With exhaustion, that's not likely.

I've paddled my yak 145 miles in 22+hours of straight paddling in calm conditions and you start making simple mistakes after a while. His only hope is that the gulf waters aren't cold right now.

Not time to stop searching though, there's still hope.

my point is... nearly everything we do in recreation has some risks.. some more than others...

I bet it is a safe wager that more people are killed /injured by drunk boaters on ONE waterway in LA.. than.. all kayakers along the gulf coast combined on any given summer...

I know several people that have died hunting and fishing... some of it their fault.. some of it the other people doing same thing..

heck.. the drive to GI alone is probably more dangerous than fishing in ANY vessel there..

I am sure you are correct but how many kayakers ate there compared to boaters and drivers?

Statistics, look into them. The sample size of people driving to Grande Isle is on a different planet than yakkers in the Gulf, so to try to make that correlation is faulty at best.

Not being a total smartass in every thread, look into it.

He was saying more accidents probably occur in vehicles than in boats. You have a freaking statistic for that are just another jackass comment?

I know what he was saying, but it was a downright stupid assertion. Do you really think it is more dangerous to drive down LA1 than to go 3 miles offshore by yourself in a kayak?

The basis of his argument was (I have to assume because he provided no real support) that more deaths/accidents occur on LA1 than in kayaks in the Gulf, which is absolutely true. However, the number of people driving down LA1 is WAY higher, so the actual factor of danger is significantly lower. Again, statistics, look into them. It's like arguing that flying is safer than driving because there are less crashes each year.

ETA: Don't be so butthurt. If you want to whine about my input into your thread, do it there. There really is no need to carry a grudge here.
