That sucks. Did he have any family?

She said that the family was in the NE or NW part of the country and very dysfunctional (whatever that means)...

the kayak was found upside down with a pfd and fishing rod. Sounds like he might have went overboard.

also, my cousin gave me the best advice for offshore fishing. Always keep yourself attached to your kayak with a rope or something. If you come off the kayak, it can move faster than you can swim. I use like a 10 foot rope and connect it on the seat and to a back belt loop.

Good idea. Watching my sailboat sail away has always been a nightmare of mine when single handing. Same shite. You're dead, but not quite yet.

I would venture that is what happened here. Somehow he was in calm water not wearing his pfd and maybe hooked a big fish that went under his boat and flipped him or something. He wasn't wearing his life jacket and his kayak was drifitng faster away from him then he could swim.

All offshore GOM platforms should have ESD (emergency shut down) devices located at various locations about the platform including the boat landing level and helipad so ESD can be activated just prior to emergency egress.

At the boat landing there should also be a "Loop" ESD which can pulled from the bow of a boat using a boat hook to shut in platform without boarding.

None of this seems to have helped this guy. Sucks for him and his family.

Is there a noticeable shutoff valve

Under those given cirucumstances, they would all be shut off valves.

Lol, I'd be afraid to turn off the wrong thing and blow myself to high heaven.

I would bet a huge crew boat knocked him out of the kayak. Those waves travel long distances so they surely never even saw him.
