I am acknowledging that something is stupid. Purchasing diamonds as a symbol of love is stupid.

Diamonds are the ultimate troll on the hetero white dude.

No one cares that little kids in China build their iPhones, you think they care if a bunch a dudes in Africa die mining diamonds?

Do you walk around with a shameless pride in the diamond you wear regardless of this?
Yes frickhead. Mind your own god damned business. In fact, mine came with a photo of the guy who dug it up and I keep it in my wallet and show it to people like he's one of my kids.

There are also industrial applications for diamonds that make them more valuable than other rare stones.
Nope, for most industrial purposes, lab made diamonds are just as good or better. The entire industry is bullshite.

True. The diamond inherently doesn't really have value or purpose, other than being a status symbol. It's mainly to differentiate the poors from the non-poors. So, unless you want your wife's friends to think you are a poor, get her a nice diamond.

I got lucky and found a girl who prefers emeralds. You can get a nice Emerald ring for a lot less than a nice diamond ring, and it stands out and gets more compliments as not many have anythign but diamonds.

Just start a marketing craze about how important it is to pass down your diamond ring to your children instead of being buried with it.
That will eliminate a large portion of the diamond market. The rings last longer than the people wearing them, there's probably enough out there now.

What is the inherent value of this?

Who really cares?
I like fast cars and trucks and she likes diamonds.
Using your argument everybody would drive a effin' KIA.

Because price is determined by supply and demand. Women demand them. Women are not reasonable. The result is an unreasonable price.

Another Jewish Cartel scheme to separate WASP from their money.
I did manage to grab mine from Russia before the Cartel stepped in for about 60% less. Still to high. Once u buy them u have vested interest in keeping prices high

The value of a $100 dollar bill does not decrease after exchange. The value of a diamond does, and anyone who has ever tried to resell a diamond knows this. That happens because the supply is artificially kept low to drive up demand. In other words, diamonds aren't actually rare. Rather the supply/demand are manipulated by a handful of companies.

Sorry but that's incorrect.

the inherent value of a $100 bill is the value of material it is made of. We place a faith in it to create value, just like diamonds
That value of the $100 bill that we have placed on it , fluctuates daily, just like diamonds.

Sorry you made a poor investment, but not everyone losses money on diamonds, otherwise there wouldnt be an entire economy built upon it.

So you are telling me a piece of paper/cotton is not kept at an artificially high value?

keep perpetuating the myth in the op. I can guarantee you there are more than a handful

Fluctuation in currency value is not comparable to the depreciation of diamonds after the initial sale. Sorry, but you're comparing apples and oranges and you're wrong.
