Because in reality, women dictate what's valuable and not valuable in the mating game.

Are people buying diamonds because they're rare?
Their high price is in part because of artificial scarcity. If De Beers opened their vaults and sold off all their diamonds the prices would tumble.

Marketing.
I still like them. But I love all sparkly stones, regardless of worth. My favorite earrings are cheap amethysts.

Well that is incredibly unlikely so I think we're safe.

Because why else would he go to Jared's?

Because chicks still dig them, and that gets you laid.

And guys like shiny status symbols that sit in their drive way. Most of us have some superficial desires that can be labeled as attention whoring, it just so happens that jewelry is a popular one for women.
I'm not bashing women for being superficial.
The OP asked why diamonds are still considered so valuable. That was my answer to the question.
If the OP had asked why luxury cars are so valuable, my answer would've been different.

I wanted a horse instead of a ring and I got it.
Later, he hit a bet in the Dubai World Cup and got a ring with it because he wanted to.
I like shiny, but horses are ALWAYS better

Because genius marketing.
Nah.
It's a global monopoly that controls the flow of diamonds

Most are coming from almost purely automated industrialized mines out of Australia these days. So, congrats on buying into no less silly a narrative than the goofy 'Diamonds are Forever' marketing one, I suppose.
What narrative am I buying into?

It's both. We are brainwashed as a society to believe that a diamond ring is the only acceptable symbol of true love to give to your fiancee.

You'd have to be hiding under a rock to have missed that one company (DeBeers) has basically monopolized the entire industry and controls practically all supply
You must have been living under a rock for the past 30 years because this certainly is not the case anymore

why does anything have value? as a society we place value on a piece if paper, yet you are complaining about diamonds

I personally will find it very hard to buy one at retail, just because of the finance in my brain that just makes it so hard to buy something that will NEVER appreciate in value and could easily lose all its value if DeBeers dumps their entire supply onto the market
DeBeers doesn't need to dump their supply to cause your diamond to lose value, they spend around 250 million per year just on marketing programs specifically designed to ensure a previously owned diamond is worth as little as possible. Which will your wife or girl friend be more impressed with a 1.5ct princess cut diamond you got from a pawn shop for 10cents on the dollar, or the exact same stone for retail price at a high end jeweler, it was DeBeers that created this mindset.

it's solely based on tradition. A woman expects a huge diamond ring and men are stupid enough to continue buying them because that's what you're supposed to do.

Whoever invented the chocolate diamond marketing plan deserves to be a billionaire.
