Yesterday, I tried to run to Walgreens around lunchtime, and there wasn't a single open parking space. First time I've ever seen that. Then I saw the flu shot sign. Frickin' people think they are preventing Ebola or something.

Sometimes....when they vaccinate against the right flu. Sometimes they get it wrong.

IIRC they cover the 6 most likely strands that will occur that year. They definitely work if you encounter one of those 6 strands. i would definitely recommend getting a flu shot, but I would avoid going to the LSU health clinic if you have insurance. I went my freshman year it took forever. Ever since then I just went to Winn Dixie pharmacy and my insurance paid for it.

I don't think it's a "random cold, fever, and pneumonia" shot. It's intended to vaccinate against a few forms of influenza.

I've gotten them twice and was off and on sick all winter. I will no longer get them.

Yes, they only cover the strand that is "predicted" to be the one that causes havoc in a particular season.

I'll take my chances with my immune system instead of taking medicine that is not totally necessary.

This may be correct. I just know it doesn't cover all strands.

It covers 3 (usually) strands of influenza. It does not cover other respiratory viruses or causes of pneumonia. In an immunocometent host, yes, it works to generate a humoral response to three variations of influenza.

I'm sure they do, but I haven't had one in years. Every time I get one I get a cold or flu like symptoms. So I don't get them anymore.

EVERY time that my oldest child took a flu shot he got the flu (not immediately after though). I'm not saying it caused it by any means but he got to the point where he just didn't want to take it. I work in health care and haven't had the flu in years and haven't taken the flu shot in years either.

Not anti about it at all ... we just don't take them in my family.

It's not a strand of flu. It's a strain of flu.

I have to get a flu shot for my job or I'm fired if I don't comply.

Even if I wasn't made to do so.....I would still get one though.

All the people saying the flu shot gave them the flu.....it takes 2 weeks for the shot to protect you. So if you were exposed to the flu before those 2 weeks...you can still get the flu.

From what I was told. The shot they give you is for a few stains(say 3) as mentioned, but that shot is good for life. So say next year you get a shot for 3 different stains, you are now covered against 6 types.

Scruffy has to get it for work and he hasn't gotten the flu yet. He also spends 90% of his time around people who have the flu. Take that for what it's worth.

Did the OP read that stupid study by a doctor who isn't even an epidemiologist?
