We're 4 days in on an 8 day trip. Came for a karate tournament, but came up a week early since we've never been here before. This place is just awe-inspiring and a testament to how great our country is, despite all its troubles. For fans of architecture, buildings everywhere in sight are stunning. You'll look at a place and think, "That must be the crown jewel of the Smithsonian," only to realize it's just an office building for a random government agency. The views from inside of the Capitol's rotunda or the Library of Congress' reading room is simply breathtaking. Watching the Changing of the Guard at Arlington will give you goosebumps. There is SO much to see and do here, it's just unreal. Seriously - if you haven't been here, put it on your bucket list.

it's fun and nice that most attractions are free and there is good mass transit to get you around.
I want to go back soon, there is some good eating there too.

For those who this think OP qualifies as "tl;dr":

1. Have Family
2. Bring Them to Washington, DC
3. ????
4. Profit

Yep, I live here. I'll never forget playing on an evening softball team on the grounds of the Washington Monument at dusk.

If you have some time and a car, and haven't gotten tired of memorials yet, check out the Teddy Roosevelt Memorial. It requires a 5-10 minute hike in the woods, totally fitting for the man.

You mean The National Cathedral? It's really a beautiful sanctuary but it's so ornate that I have trouble listening to the sermon.

To feel the real culture experience of DC, go to the SouthWest, near the Anacostia River.

Great fishing. Just don't forget your level IV kevlar and the trama plates.

DC is an awesome city (district whatever )

My wife and I love it. Possible semi-permanent residence after we leave New Orleans
