Did you have brisket and ribs at Pinkerton's or were looking for chicken wings? I like to drink a couple Shiner's at Alice's Tall Texan and then bounce to Pinkerton's for $1 beers on Thursdays and get some brisket and ribs for the casa.

At 36 I would get a Heights place and rent your garage apartment to a mid-20's girl in her exploratory phase.

I live on a 1/3rd acre in Garden Oaks with my wife. I get a lot of poison ivy because my neighbors don't take care of their shite. We're closer to the heights. Oak Forest people are wannabe Garden Oaks people with little yards.

Relocating to Houston

Just a few years ago, my comment would have been, there is only one place worse to live that N.O. and that's Houston.

However, that was then, and now I say to you, "Congrats on escaping that slum!"

Comfort food, try Dot Coffee Shop. It's a part of the Pappa's chain. Gulf Freeway @ 610.

In the mood for something different, Garson on Hillcroft @ Westeheimer.

I had both brisket and ribs at pinkertons. Just a little bit of a la carte meat, no sides. It was good. The best BBQ of the places I've tried thus far.

I ended up renting an apartment on Washington for the short term.

If I didn't follow the company here and stayed in NOLA and got another job, it would likely be 25-30% pay cut.

It's good. I don't live there but have friends in that industry that do. Dallas, Austin, Houston are all good markets for IT

ETA - I have 20 yrs of experience in the industry

Perry's Steakhouse has a 4 for $44 restaurant week special.

And, Their Friday pork chop lunch special is one of the best deals on the planet. YUGE sloooow cooked double pork that takes 2 sittings to finish (great doggy bag)

2 H-town locales, 1 in Memorial City mall

Houston peeps, what electric company should I go with? Has anyone tried Griddy? LINK
Find a website that compares the rates and get the cheapest one.

It's the same electricity regardless of which company you're paying your money to.

There is a great little hole in the wall, takeout Mexican place w/a drive thru on the corner of Washington & Shepherd called El Rey Taqueria.. I only found it on the tail end of my years in Houston, and wish i had found it a lot sooner... El Tiempo is a good sit-down TexMex place.. also liked to get burritos to fo go from Mission burrito and Freebirds... Star Pizza on Washington (sounds very near your place) has great pizza.. and if you ever need a New Orleans food fix-- BB's Cafe (several locations near you) has pretty authentic gumbo, jambalaya etc.. dont try the po-boys though, I've never had a decent one outside of NOLA... oh and Barnaby's Cafe has good stuf too.

I hit that up once already, at Memorial. Plan on doing it again tomorrow. Great meal for $15, and even let me swap the mashed potatoes for a different vegetable.

I'd estimate more LSU fans in Houston per capita than in New Orleans, it will astound you.

There are more LSU fans in Kingwood than Aggies and Hook'ems.
